Here are some of mine...it might be a few years before I get larger shrubs...I always enjoyed a street where we used to live that when you drove down it in the spring when they were blooming, you always slowed down and opened your window for that magnificent smell...
Beautiful lilacs. I ordered one for spring for my zone 8. A couple people I know in the area have had success in Texas with this variety.
Sherry that is so cute.. It is a most wonderful smell going past them.. I keep my white one trimmed so it stays short.. I could not reach the top on the large one. biudagarmeder..... Smart thinking .. You will love it...... I know Texas grows wonderful palm trees.....my brother in law lives there.
Aren't they great? A true sign of spring! I wish they bloomed for a longer period of time. I've got several varieties in my yard...tree-form, two dwarf varieties ('Miss Kim' and 'Meyeri'), and the common lilac. I'm trying to establish a hedge with the common lilacs, just like Sherry's, and it should make a very fragrant screen between us and the neighbors.
The 'Miss Kim' is a vase-shaped variety that grows to about 4-5 feet high and makes a great hedge. The 'Meyeri' is more rounded and can get to 6 feet high (slow-growing, though and it can be kept smaller) and it makes a great specimen all by itself. They're both great and I know they're hardy by you so if you can I'd find a spot for them in your yard!
I have already ordered the pink re bloomers ..Due in the spring....... Glad your having fun with them.
Those lilacs are all so lovely and with everyone in awe about the fragrance I feel quite envious. I am just thinking to myself - another one for the wishlist??
Well you cant smell them on here.. The flowers and fragrance is something else....... Dont forget to make them the double ones.. prettiest. ANd that is what gardenstew is for ...........Show off..LOL
I love lilacs but have none as Texas is not good to grow them Heather has about 6 or 7 so I enjoyed them in April when Logan was born.Netty that color is so wonderful Barb thagt white one is also wonderful.
glendann, try Syringa vulgaris Blue Skies, it is tolerant to zone 9 and does not require a cold freeze to set blooms. It tolerant of heat and humidity. This is the one that I have seen grown in Texas. It reminds of back home in Ohio at grandmas! The only locations I have seen it do well are planting in the morning sun, not the heat of the day. I would be hesitant to plant it in our direct hot sun.
