Droopy, They are saying that if we DO get that much, and if the temps go as low as they expect, it will take the crews 36-48 hours to get to the residential streets. They treat the main roads with a de-icing solution but it doesn't work if the temps go below a certain temp... Although February is usually our snowiest month, this is rather a lot to deal with for folks who aren't used to heavy snow. Two or three inches can halt everything! We had 21 or so inches back in December too remember! So, it's been quite a winter for snow. And we are true wimps when it comes to cold too... GG -- yes, I saw that you all have been getting a lot of rain too. This storm is bringing a lot of tropical moisture, so I hear.... CK, my sources tell me the snow expected here is supposed to be wet and heavy. I'll be shoveling through the storm and in stages, I predict. Last time, I waited till it was all over and shoveling 2 feet of snow all at once was NO FUN!
Ah, I see. The residential roads will get ploughed here some time during huge snow falls, just so that we can get in or out. The proper snow clearing will come later, but we won't be snowed in. Two or three inches is not a problem here, bar at the beginning of winter when we're not used to snow. Most cars can get through that easily. The main roads are usually well cleared, but it's not a crisis if there are a couple of inches. People just drive slower.
It's 2:30 pm and we are at 3 inches on the ground now. The last I heard for Washington/Baltimore is 26 to 30 inches total.
It's about 3 a.m. and it has been snowing earnestly for about 12 hours. It's expected to continue through tomorrow evening. The heaviest is supposed to be through the night and morning. They say it is snowing about 2-3 inches per hour. Visibility is less than 1/4 mile and wind is sustained at 20-30 mph with a lot of gusts > 35. Pretty wild ride. It's hard to tell how much has fallen because the wind has blown it into drifts that are knee high. The path is about mid shin. It's really heavy wet snow so it's sticking to everything. Alot of bushes are laying down from the weight of it. I am hoping we don't lose power but am concerned about the weight on the wires. Here are two pics -- hard to get a good one without going out in it. I was out visiting the neighbor's until just a bit ago and was completely snow covered just walking across the street. It's pretty, gotta admit. Back yard 2:30 a.m. Not even half way through the storm. ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) 2:30 a.m. Snow is blowing sideways in the wind. Great shots, Daisy! It looks wonderful there. Perhaps it wasn't so crazy to hamster food and stuff, eh? It really looks like it's getting serious there. Good luck and try and keep contact with the outside world (GS). ...Oh yes, and send more foto's pleeeeeeeeease.
About 12 to 14 inches here and it's about done. But now we have 25 to 35 mph winds blowing. Here are some pics from around the house. 4 ft drifts by the wood shed. Garage roof.
Good Grief, Capt'n. You've got it bad there as well. What a load of snow! I wonder if deer or animals will come into your yard in search of food.
Very nice photos, its hard to get good shots at night. As much as I love a big storm, I hope you do not have problems with losing power. I look forward to seeing more photos. I love taking photos of the snow. I just finished watching a news report on the storm with reporters in Wash. D.C. and Toms River, NJ (where my brother lives) My family on the Jersey shore is getting this too. Glad you were prepared with all your comfort food and wine. Enjoy the beauty of the snow. Make a snow angel for me .
Sjoerd,We had a deer in the yard the other night and he wrecked the one bird feeder. Found it and the squirrel baffle laying on the ground the next morning. And we didn't even have any snow then. So the feeder is not only squirrel proof, it's deer proof too.
So far so good, Gail! Thankfully I have not lost power though some friends in other areas have.... I keep eyeing the various wires that are heavy with snow, but all is holding so far. It is still coming down at about 10 a.m. so that's about 18 hours. They are still saying it will continue till evening. I have not started shovelling yet... I can't decide if it is worth it or not! I know I will have to get to it eventually... I'm working out my strategy! Here are a couple from this a.m. Still from inside the house -- will have to venture out soon. Back yard at 9:30 a.m. Lilac bush laying over the garden path.... ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) Several doves are waiting out the storm under my porch. When I opened the screen door to snap the pic, they flew up into the pine tree but have since returned to their shelter. I can access the area from a door in the basement so I'll put some seed thre for them next time they fly out. Here is one who came up to say hello. Hello Miss Dove.... ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) Austin, ever-friendly.... is fascinated by Miss Dove. Austin looking at Miss Dove. ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) So that is the current status here.... CK, you've got a good bit of snow too, huh? This is a biiiiig storm. Yes, Sjoerd, it is good that I stocked up.... I think later today some of my neighbors and I are going to have a pot luck. I think I would disappear if I tried to make a snow angel at this point!! But I will try. Later, everyone. All with snow, do be careful and stay warm.
I just checked the radar, and it is all past me now. The tail end of it is in eastern Ohio, so Dausy you have a ways to go yet! But that wind is howling out there, the temp is only at 24F so the wind chill is probably down around 10F.
I know, CK, I know.... we even had thunder and lightning at about 4 this a.m. I'm glad you're through it! So now the shoveling. I've decided to get started. I'm putting some beef stew on to simmer first.
Dramatic foto of the snow-update, Daisy. You are a brave girl to venture out into that. Perhaps you should get an extention cord and precede yourself with a hair-dryer. Gorsh, stew sounds awfully good--just the thing for such a day there. It's just the thing for the foggy and wet day here as well. I shall be having lamb stew with my own veg and spuds as filler. Jeez, I wish that time would hurry up when I want it to. I wonder what that friendly Austin has in mind for that puffy little tortle. Cackle. Stay warm there and if you dare to venture out to make a snow angel, better tie a rope around your waist and anchor that to a large oak or something.....one jerk on the rope means-- OK. Two jerks means bring-- me up, bring me up!!
wow! great pics daisy and ck! you are really getting hit hard there. we're still having fog and rain. haven't seen the sun for a long long time. gotta admit, rain in February just doesn't seem right here...can you believe it...i miss the snow!!!
Your photos look beautiful. I think Sjoerd is correct about using a rope if you try and make a snow angel. Keep those photos coming and don't overdo when you get out to shovel. Will keep my fingers crossed that you don't lose power.
