5/7/2013 Updates http://www.flickr.com/photos/95557933@N03/sets/72157633429514639/show/ Everyone is still growing. We had a week of dark soaking rains so I am fighting some powdery mildew but I think I am getting ahead of it. I have been spraying with a milk mixture for the last two days. So far it's working. I have only seen two horn worms so far they were tiny babies and are now in bug heaven. Everyday I murder several stink bugs, their demon spawn, & their eggs. I am even seeing new breeds I have not seen in my yard before! Nasty buggers! I think the wasps and I have gotten the caterpillars on the collards under control (THANK GOD!). RECENTLY Aphids have been showing up on the okra but the lady bugs and some soapy water are making short work of them. Good LORD! Too many icky critters!!!!! It's a miracle I have any fruits at all.
UPDATE to the UPDATES Still fighting caterpillars, squash bugs, & aphids but so far I am able to stay on my A game keep their populations and damage to a minimum. WOW!!! You are doing GREAT Ren. I tried planting bell peppers and all I get are just miniature ones. I think I'll try again, thanks for the inspiration. Have you tried growing snow peas or just sweet peas?
Thanks guys!!! I have tried snow peas and have been successful but as soon as it starts getting hot they wilt and die. Even in the shade. . The bush beans thrive and kick out a lot of fruit even when its a million degrees so I tend to stay with them. My Bell peppers like compost and a lot of it. The ones I grew this year had an issue with all the rain but finally started kicking out fruits recently when we had a mini dry spell. Now it's raining in the afternoons again but not for a week at a time like last time. Keep trying. I still struggle with squash, zincs, & cucumber. Hopefully I will master them soon! I am already doing better this time. I almost threw a party when I was actually able to pic a zuc and eat it!!! It was the best tasting zucchini ever!
Thanks Ren, guess I'll stay away from peas for the time being. I did tried some cucumbers from US and they did terrible with no fruits. Those that I got locally, plenty of fruits ... maybe you should get seeds suitable for the tropics.
Well my garden is mostly a success this year. I lost a couple of plants to blight and powdery mildew. It is getting too hot and a lot of stuff has bolted. A couple of tomato plants are still giving me fruit and my collards, blue berries, grapes, and black berries are still rocking it! I planted a second batch peppers and bush beans today. I am going to plant more okra this weekend if the rain breaks again. A friend asked me to try my hand at sweet potatoes so I am giving it a go. Wish me luck. I'm going to need it! I am STILL waiting on my black berries and grapes to get ready. I am REALLY excited about them they are growing like crazy. I am just waiting patiently. Well kind of. LOL My mint is taking over the entire yard! When I mow or walk by it smells like a candy cane. I LOVE it!!!! I harvested two gallon bags of okra, one gallon bag of beans, 3 gallon bags of jalapeno peppers, a gallon bag of bell peppers. I didn't get to save any blue berries as my daughter eats them right off the bush so they rarely make it into the house. :-D We also had some awesome squash and zucchini! I am deciding what I want to plant for the fall now. If anything. I may take a break since I am going to go back to school this year to finish my degree. I am looking for some passion fruit seeds since I have a bare fence begging to be covered. They are really hard to find even here in FL. :-( ( photo / image / picture from Ren2012's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Ren2012's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Ren2012's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Ren2012's Garden ) Squatter ( photo / image / picture from Ren2012's Garden ) Sweet Potatoes ( photo / image / picture from Ren2012's Garden )
