Pick something that can be pruned easily if it's growing entangled with a Don Juan. Here's the clematis pruning types:

Group 1 (none) - Blooms early. Flowers only on previous year's growth.

Group 2 (prune light) - Blooms on previous year's growth, and then new growth. Prune immediately after flowering.

Group 3 (prune hard) - Blooms on new growth. Prune in late winter when dormant.

Here's the Clematis I've been happy with...

I'd avoid Sweet Autumn entirely, it grows incredibly fast and will take over. You'll never see your Don Juan. I'd also avoid Duchess of Edinburgh, it looks nice each spring then dies off each year. Very finicky.

Now Im thinking that the pink wouldnt stand up to the dark red of the Don Juan. Wouldnt it just fade into the background? I remember reading somewheres that you shouldnt plant pinks next to reds because of that.

I don't know. It's a pretty bright contrast to the dark red of a Don Juan, and really, the rose is mostly green in reality. I have a dark color with my Don Juan and it doesn't show up much at all. I think a light pink or white would be perfect.

Youre right. I was thinking the flowers not the leaves. I think Ill do that. That would be perfect together!

But I just saw that the voting is tied! If the yellow rose wins Ill plant the Moonflower with it. If the Don Juan wins, Ill plant the Clemis with them.

I think the Don Juan would be very pretty on it!! You could add the moonflower vines also and it would be very beautiful and have a nice scent at night to mix with the Don Juan's scent!!! And the contrast would be very pretty also!!
