    I answered (in a not very timely manner :-| ) a post of yours about corn.

    If my fuzzy geography is right you have to plant not in allowance for cold, but monsoonal rain.

    There is a whole 'nother landrace of OP corn developed in China that is also a sweet corn described here (in USA) as 'glutinous'.

    It has some virtues that may lend itself to your Pacific-rim gardening adventure.
