Thanks! I feel I'll have something pretty close to the original when done...now I am glad I looked at them so closely!

I wonder if you could use a gromet or eyelet, large enough for the light to fit through, to hold the 2 together and eliminate the glue altogether? Very pretty, neat idea.

I've got the grommets, but I am afraid they would still need some glue...I peeled the glue off the original. I am just waiting for my lights to arrive so I can really start experimenting. It will be very satisfying to say I made these with soda cans!

MArtha stewart used regular christmas type lights (or C7) and made shades from vellum paper. The link (below)shows the flowery ones, but I have also seen her make cones out of the vellum. Very nice and inexpensive, I dont see why you couldn't use baking parchment or even colored transparencies from office supply stores. Good luck!

Well...I ended up taking a garland of silk stephanotis flowers and I took it apart. I wired the leaves to the light's cord and I have each tiny light as the center of a flower. It is very delicate looking and I will need to get some pictures. The best thing is that it seems to be holding up outdoors.

    Pictures!

Here is a picture of my finished light string! I gave up trying to cut all the cans into flowers. The lights were very tiny and delicate and the shades over powered them a bit. I ended up getting a silk flower garland...stephanotis..and took it apart. I put the flowers on the lights (they hold in place without glue!) and then wired the leaves to the light wires. The effect is very delicate day and night.

Great idea Anna. Just think you can change it seasonally if you wanted to. Like little poinsettas. Turned out very pretty and a very good idea I think.

    Thanks!

Yes, I will try to get a picture tonight when they come on...the lights are white, but look almost light blue.

Thanks Eileen! The lights I used were actually hard to find (solar) so I probably won't be making any more anytime soon. I am so glad I decided to go with the silk flowers....more gentle on the hands and very quick to assemble...everything in less than 1 hour!
