Gail, the clematis and climbing roses will go elsewhere in the yard or maybe on the carport poles or front porch. My husband loves roses and I think that would be a wonderful tribute to/for him to feel included....shhhh it will be a surprise for him. Another plant that I didn't realize I was familiar with from my childhood, was the passionflower...back then in my great grandma's yard/ditch, they were maypops to us kids...man we loved those things. Might have to grow some just because....lol.
Hummerbum, Passion Flower, Maypops (Passiflora incarnata) is great for butterflies, being a host plant. We've had our Passion Flower eaten down to the stems by Gulf Frittilaries. It does go completely dormant in winter, but after the dead vine/leaves are cut off, it comes up again from the root. And about coming up from the root--if you have a vine, you will have multiple vines. The plant spreads quickly and eagerly, but new ones can be dug and moved, or mowed over.
Hello hummerbum, sorry I've not been on ...I lost my clematis they was lovely but roses yes and get nice scented ones beautiful smell in the garden for your hubby to enjoy. I've never grown up around passionflowers...so I just googled them to see what they look like and the colours are rich
If your ole man likes roses--you could try the Westerland. Link: https://www.gardens4you.co.uk/kordes-climbing-rose-westerland-gb-en.html This rose has a very special colour, but the fragrance is quite unique and special. I have this rose for its fragrance.
Thanks Sjoerd....beautiful rose. Have to try and find it here in the states if I can though. Gail, I hope that you are feeling better.
Congrats on your onions and crossvine ! Good luck on finding that rose, Hummer. How's the move going?
Hummerbum, Westerland roses are available at Heirloom Roses-https://www.heirloomroses.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=roses+climbing-roses+westerland. I haven't ordered from them, but all the reviews are pretty good. If you can't find a local supplier, you may want to give Heritage a try.
Thanks for asking Sjoerd. Next week is the last of the apartment move crap to the house..mostly my garden stuff...pvc pipe, cages, etc. We have been enjoying the home. The space is crazy. Having an outdoor space is amazing and overwhelming at the same time, after growing in small spaces for 10 years. The plants are enjoying these 70 to 80 degree days.
Oh meid, I am so happy for you...and your garden plants. I can well imagine that having so much room is a good but daunting experience for you. Ach--you'll get used to it...or....maybe not. Enjoy it!!
