Interesting point about native names for plants. The death of different languages runs the risk of the use for plants being lost since no one can report their properties.

Quite right, Palu —on all counts.
I can’t use our common names for plants because it would mean nothing to the folks here. I know some common names in english, but not all. I feel that it is better for me to use Latin names on here, for then all can see what plant is being indicated.

A lot of the so called common names for plants in English were made up by Ruskin and his friends the Romantic poets. Most country folk just said "That blue thing that grows over there!"

It is difficult to grasp the origins of some common names over here. Some are the Latin ones, but others just leave one scratching one’s head.

Scratch...scratch. I do not know that one.
Well, of course I have not heard of that one. We call it, “Wall Pepper”. But yes, that is the sort of thing I am talking about.
We have a plant called “Day Coo-Coo’s Bloom” (Silene dioica). What kind of image are we supposed to conjure-up from this common name? What does it have to do with the bird?
