Kay-Your reponse & mine crossed as we sent our respective emails. That is awful, the damage that was caused by last years flooding. It is one thing to hear about it, another thing to actually see it or know someone whose property was devasted. I have a close friend whose brother's house was blown away by a tornado in Brimfield MA this past June. The family were huddling under a matress in the basement as the contents of the basement were blown around above them. The brother's foot extended beyond the mattress, and a barbell fell on it, breaking his ankle. Their dog got sucked out from the mattress, but fortunately showed up in the barn, under a car. Fortunately no one was hurt other than the brother's broken ankle. The community as been very supportive of the families that lost their homes. They are now living in a trailor on the site, and reconstruction has begun.
Hi Kay, sooo got your nose stuck in other peoples gardens,..lol,..ditto!. Sadly i watched the flooding in Missouri,..and of late how some people are still suffering in many ways,..beyond belief that flood and the damage. Its not unusual to have some flooding here,..but only a little,.. and down beyond the area of that weir you see in the pictures,..the lake level is what you see on top of the weir so when the lake starts flooding as it is doing so it just keeps pouring over the weir and the river keeps rising,..in 2009 it was level with the weir and higher,..in the picture below the water came up to where the white van is parked. ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) ---------------------------------------------------- Hi Cayuga Morning, when you see it on paper,..a river rising by 10 foot,..it hits you,..and as the days pass you will be amazed at the changing landscape,..in the picture below ALL of the meadows on the far side of the river will be well underwater. It's sad to realize that all the flooding does such damage to the trees. They sat under (or in) water all summer, and will not be able to recover. The roots have rotted. I could see across the river to Iowa, and there was a path of dead trees, and vegetation. Farmland has been scraped of it's top soil. A woman in a shop we visited showed us some photos taken in Iowa. Very sad. I guess part of it is nature's way, but this flooding was not entirely Mother Nature. Upriver, water was held in recreational lakes etc. and when the snow melted, it was too much water.
Hi Kay, that's the upsetting part,..seeing all those trees being destroyed and all down to what happens upriver,..water is held on the lakes upriver here as well then with heavy rain its overflow. Looking at the picture above,..through those small trees and across the river,..compare that shot to the way it is today,..see the pole just off center that's where the river starts on the far side. ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) When i started this thread you could see ALL the steps,..not many left over water now. ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) The rise of the water at the weir. I took some pictures today of the rising river,..the weir has now submerged so the lake and the river are at the same level but the lake is overflowing,..so now the serious flooding begins,..there is very little land on the west side of the river that is not submerged for many many miles down south. ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) Only four steps left above water. I'm so sorry to hear of the imminent danger of flooding near your home Philip. "Been there. Done that". It can be so devastating. I hope the damage isn't too extreme. That last photo is terrific! Perfect lighting and mood-catching... I can sense the worry of your rising river.
Hi Cheryl, many people are worried,..when the water rises beyond those steps its at the level of many town houses in particular any you see in the pictures,..but down river well people are already moving out of the area,..on the east coast a Flood alert was given,..some people were drowned including a policeman helping others,..every so often floods reach a new record level,..seeing its started so early this year it bears watching. Our skies here really show Autumn sun,..a weird colour.
Oh, dear! I'm so sorry that you're having floods. Please keep us updated on how it goes. I guess more and more people will evacuate as the water level rises. What a horrible situation.
Philip, what is the name of this river? You have probably told us previously, but I can't remember it.. Hank
Philip, Hope you and your neighbors will be alright. That water is really rising! Please take care. And keep Molly safe too!
Hi Droopy, i will keep you updated,..at present we are looking towards the 25th of November because it was on this date in 2009 that we had houses flooded in the town,..the picture below is on Nov 25th 2009 and those houses are right at the weir where i take the shots of the steps,..approx 10 yards from the weir. 25th Nov 2009 ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) --------------------------------------------------- Hi Hank, the river is the Shannon River,..our largest river,..its some 240 miles long,..where we are its flowing from Lough Ree. River Shannon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ---------------------------------------------------- Hi Kay, its Molly i have to watch,..where there is water Molly has no fear,..but she doesn't know the danger of fast flowing water which we have at present.
In/near Athlone, maybe? Never been there but would really like to go.. Probably too late for me though.. Hank
Hi Cayuga Morning, i will,..i will,..but i still want to go on the lake, . ----------------------------------------------------- Hi Hank, never too late,..not while you can still get around,..though i have started to slow down a tad myself,..lol,..but i insist on trying to move fast,..the body sometimes reminds me i shouldn't. I am on the edge of Athlone Town,..approx 5 mins walk from my house due west the town ends.
