    They are all so beautiful. Now I'm going outside and give my roses some much needed, tender loving care.
    I've been shamed into it :oops:

    Hi gardenelf,
    i don't think the difference between "Baking Soda" and "Baking Powder" would make much difference using it in the mixture to prevent or cure Mildew,..it would be different in baking of course,.."Baking Soda" and "Baking Powder" are both sodium Bicarbonate,..but added to "Baking Powder" is Cream Of Tartar,or Potassium.

    Oh i think we all make the mistake of not spacing rose bushes or most plants that remain in the garden year after year,..they grow bigger than we anticipated,..i know i am guilty as well,..i just didn't think seven years ahead,lol.

    They are beautiful. I am in awe. I live in an area where we have black spot outbreaks every year. The area I live in is very humid. I spray with baking soda, soap and water, and it does work, but there always comes a time when I am away, or not able to keep up, and the black spot usually takes hold at some point. My roses survive, but with the foliage whittled away to a bare minimum, they aren't as lovely as they could be.

    Hi Kathyd,
    i never tire of looking in the garden at roses,..from rose bud to fully bloomed they are worth looking at.

    Like you i get the attack of Black Spot,..and in one area the start of Mildew,..the Baking Soda mix really does help,..but as you said when one is away and the Black Spot arrives,..oops.

    I am trying to get a mix together that will really stop Black Spot and the like in its tracks,..now as for insects,..mainly Greenfly,..i never see them at all,..i put that down to part of the mix,..Baking Soda,..i will be getting a good quantity of Neem Oil,..it will be interesting to mix this with some other stuff,..meanwhile i came across another All Purpose Mixture,..i will give it a try on a rose bush.

    All Purpose Rose Disease Fighter

    * 1 medium onion, chopped
    * 3 - 4 cloves garlic, crushed
    * ½ Jalapeno pepper, crushed
    * 1½ tsp baking soda
    * Cheesecloth or fine mesh
    * Spray bottle
    * 1 or 2 drops dishwashing liquid (or Insecticide soap) to help mixture adhere to foliage

    Preparation:

    * Steep garlic, onion and pepper in 1 quart of warm water for 1 hour.
    * Strain the mix through the cheesecloth or mesh and retain liquid, add the baking soda
    * In spray bottle dilute 1 part of the strained liquid with 4 parts warm water and add the dishwashing liquid.
    * Mist plants lightly.

    This formulation has the added benefit of repelling insects as well.

    It looks like a great recipe Philip...I'll copy it and next year give it a try. It's getting cooler and a bit dry now so the roses might have a chance to have a last flush of bloom before the frost comes.

    It might be worth a try,..any of the concoctions i tried so far did some good,..either in prevention or cure,..and of course they were less costly and of course most important,..less dangerous than the chemical remedies,..all we can do is strive to improve.

    Philip, These roses all need names, so we can refer to them. I must not have seen the ones at the top of the post on page 5 before tonight, maybe they wouldn't load that day and I forgot to go back to them, never the less they were all beautiful. I just wish I could smell them all.
