Glad to hear that all your hibiscus are doing well Donna. How's the Sunset doing? Mine is about 12 inches tall... but it has a bloom today! Is that normal? Sunset Hibiscus - first bloom ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
Hi Cheryl,..one is Texas State Hibiscus,..i will check later to find the package as i can not remember the colour,..duh The second is a Wild Hibiscus,..red. Another is the Confederate Rose,..white and dark pink.
Looking forward to seeing them in bloom Philip. And speaking of blooms... here's the other Luna that I have. Luna Hibiscus - white ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
Hi Cheryl,..two more beauties,..i envy you,..no wounder i have gone gaga over Hibiscus,..one of mine is a pink named "Woodbridge" now that is thriving :-D
Cheryl you have beautiful color collection of hibiscus! We have the Luna white (jumbo) and the bush looks gorgeous when in full bloom but the problem we face is, it literally takes over the entire flower bed and every Spring there are hundreds of new plants that we need to pull out and throw. How do you manage yours?
These Lunas are only about 2+ foot tall and wide. Last year, they didn't make many seeds, but it was their first year. So there was no problem with reseeding. I have other Hibiscus, like the Texas Star and a Hardy... no problems with reseeding with those either. I guess I'd better be diligent with deadheading. I really like them, but I don't want them completely taking over.
And here's my newest Hibiscus. It's such a beautiful plant with lovely variegated foliage. And now it's putting out these beautiful flowers. Vareigated Hibiscus ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
Cheryl, Not sure about the sunset until they bloom. But looking at the leaf on yours I'm thinking I don't have one. Is your new hibiscus perennial? It's beautiful. Going to go plant some hibiscus seeds.
Donna... the Sunset is doing pretty good. Still not very big, maybe 18 inches... but it put out another bloom. I just found out the variegated one is called "Rose flake". It's listed as hardy for zones 9-10, but a lady that lives in my town has it growing for years. she said she just covers them up when it's going to freeze and then cut them back to about 1 foot in the spring. I planted mine on the south side of my storage building where it can be protected when I put up the "winter house". So hopefully it won't get damaged from frost. I'll try to remember to take a photo of the leaves. I'd love it even if it didn't give pretty flowers! Thanks Cayuga. I often wonder about the plural of Hibiscus. I like hibisci! :-D
According to Merriam-Webster the plural is Hibiscuses or Hibiscus (like the plural of Deer is either Deer or Deers) Strangely enough hibisci is a species of the Speckled Green Fruitworm Moth - Orthosia hibisci Okay, I will exit out of the Merriam-Webster website before I bore you all silly. :-D
Thanks for the lesson Toni! Here's is the gorgeous foliage on the Rose Flake Hibiscus. I can hardly wait until it has lots of blooms open. Hibiscus 'Rose Flake' ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
You have inspired me Cheryl.....I AM going plant shopping this weekend. I haven't been since early May, can you believe it? I want another Hibiscus, I had two out back that died long ago and the Luna Red I put out front Spring last year didn't make it through the summer....I miss them.
A-HA! I finally tempted Toni! GsdRuth and I were going to go shopping for Natives this weekend, but we have a funeral to attend. So it'll be another week before we can go. I'm so ready to see what's out there!
Randy says Thanks! Actually for getting me out to go to a garden center, every time we have been to Lowe's for parts and pieces of some project the last two months he has asked if I was going to the garden center and I said No. He knows how much happier I am after buying plants and planting them is something to look forward to, so his Thanks is really a big Thank You.
