I wear shorts, t-shirts, sneakers with ankle socks and an NRA cap when gardening and I do NOT garden in the sun. I would be sick as a dog after just a very few minutes in the sun, some time I think my vampire genes are becoming more dominant  .
I follow the shade, I still get enough sun light to have a light version of the farmers tan and a high Vit D level, but being dark haired and fairly dark skin I haven't had problems with sun burns since I stopped being in the sun many, many years ago.

I dont usually use it unless Im going to the beach (once every 10 years or so lol) or something. I do get rather brown on my shoulders, but the rest of my body seems pretty resistant to tanning (dont get burned easily either, with one or two exceptions). When I do use it, I use one that is a tanning lotion plus sunscreen.

The doctor suggested I get a big floppy hat, which I'm definitely going to invest in. I see them on folks all the time, but I'm having the DEVIL of a time finding one that won't break the bank! It's for GARDENING, not winning a fashion show! Jeez! :(
