Willowisp, I have never grown Shallots. Are they akin to bunching onions? Or what we call green onions. This must be the year for lettuce. We gave been feeding several neighbors from our's. A lot is volunteer from last year's going up to seed. Today we picked and froze our first kale for this year. The Cabbage moth hasn't found it yet, but they have been seen in the area. Some cucumbers are almost ready to climb.
Shallots are like small onions. They are interchangeable with onions. But they're milder and have a slightly garlic taste. I tried starting onion seeds, but they never came up and by the time I knew they weren't going to grow I could only find packages of 25 onion sets. That's way too many for my little garden. But I did find shallots. Oh and I forgot to mention in my last post the neighbor told me, our zone is 6A. But she always buys for 5 to make sure they're good if we have a bad winter. https://www.thekitchn.com/can-you-swap-onions-and-shallots-for-the-other-in-a-recipe-183281
I just bought these at the local co-op, split them up (there were 5) and planted them. They were stuck together, like the cloves in a garlic, without the core. They're doing really good!
