I don't root mine at all. I twist the top off the fruit rather than cut it and then peel off a couple of rounds of bottom leaves. Usually you can then see some small, immature rootlets. Sometimes I leave them for a day or 2 to dry off if they are very juicy, and sometimes I just plant them. I do plant them in gritty, cactus soil but they don't get fed other than if and when, and it is more if I feed the cactus.
Thank you both. I was just thinking about this and wondering how glorious home grown pineapple must be. How different is it than store bought?
Well here in the chilly UK they are often quite hard, and can be quite sharp. However, I am keen on hard fruit, I like my peaches like apples! But, the home grown pineapple was something else. The scent filled the conservatory for days, heavenly, and it was so juicy and succulent. I could have shoved a straw in it and just drunk it. Sweet, full of flavour and mouthwateringly delicious.
