It's about on schedule Sjoerd :like: We have a camera system hooked up to the shed so we can view them from the house. Very useful!

Frank, you have to post some photos. Lambs are the cutest things.

Tell me some more about your sheep and lambing situation.
I have always had an interest in the process of lambing. There were the Lambing Live shows on the BeeB and I was really interested in that. Too bad that there isn't an opportunity over here to do that during the season. I think that I could do it.

At any rate, tell me more about your shepherding operation there.

@Sjoerd when it comes to sheep I am still the "farm-hand" so I don't have too much heavy involvement but I am on hand to help when needed. The lambing is pretty straightforward most of the time. A sheep will begin to show signs that they are nearing birth, beginning to pace the shed close to the walls and making making a comfortable place in the straw for themselves to lie on. They will produce a water bag which hangs outside - that's when they are very close. The sheep will do most of the work during the birth but in some cases some human assistance is required. For example lambs can turn around inside the womb so they come the wrong way round. My younger brother and father are the "pullers". You throw a small bit of cold water on the lamb as soon as it comes out to "shock" it to life. Then the mother starts cleaning it and within 15-20 minutes it is on its feet.

In extreme cases the vet will need to be called. *GORY DETAILS AHEAD* For example I remember two years back a sheep still-birthed and in the process of pushing out the dead lamb had forced a part of her intestines outside of her body. We called the vet who got us to hold her upside down while he pushed it back in and then gave her an injection. I thought for sure she was a goner but surprisingly she made a full recovery, unbelievable.

Always amazing to see life come into the world.

Frank, you have a strong stomach! Most folks would run screaming or faint dead-away if they saw sheep intestines. I do admire people who put the welfare of the animal ahead of their own "squeamishness". My congratulations and sincere admiration to you and your farming family.

It sounds good to me. I can remember helping out on my grandparent's farm with the birthing of cattle. They thought that I would be put off by it all because I was a city boy...but no. I really enjoyed it all.
I once had to pull a calf out of a dead cow that had been struck by lightening. the calf turned out to be dead as well. I have always wondered if those farmers were not pulling my leg. they must have known that the calf was already dead. The grown-ups in my family are all pranksters.

Well, that is really straying off topic, but your post today brought back memories and present day wishes.

How many sheep do you folks have anyway?

Good Wednesday morning all. Currently 5°C and overcast. It was a lovely day yesterday, and will be another nice day today. I am not missing snowy cold weather at all! Off shortly to do the groceries and errands, and dropping off cookies along the way. Have a great day all :)

Good morning all. There is no holiday atmosphere around here.....mid 70s in late December.
The window AC in our bedroom died a noisy death about 6 a.m. yesterday morning.....so a new one has taken it's place. New roof ridge vent, major work on both cars and then the AC unit....so with each new expenditure we have sung merry Christmas to us to each other. But our gift shopping is done, now to finish the poncho for Amy today, get everything wrapped, hit the grocery store tomorrow for Christmas day vittles and get the cinnamon bread done. Then on Sunday all 7 of us pile into the mini-van we have rented for the day and head down to Randy's folks for a late holiday with them.

Good morning! Today's the big day for us Norwegians. A rush to get ready in the morning, then at around 17.00 we'll all sit down, have our big Christmas dinner and then open the presents. Tomorrow's a day for lazing about. Lovely Christmas Eve to all who celebrate.

Good Christmas Eve Morning all! Not feeling very Christmasy at 13°C, but I am OK with that. It was nice to walk the dog in just a light jacket this morning. Strong winds though, and I hear some areas had gale force winds last night.
It all starts today ... a big dinner and presents to open this evening, and then Santa comes tonight. A relaxing day tomorrow and then another big dinner on the 26th. Then it will all be over again for another year!
I have some baking to do this morning - dessert for later- and then I'm going to try to relax! Have a great day all, and MERRY CHRISTMAS :)

The pie dough is chilling and I'll bake a pecan pie later today. We plan to mow (yes, mow grass!) and add the clippings to the deep litter in the coop for the ladies. The deep litter helps keep them warm--if it ever gets cold here!
Enjoy your Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day!

Trip to the grocery store this morning wasn't too traumatic, it was beginning to get crowded by the time we checked out. But hopefully we have all the fixins we will need for tomorrow and tonight.
Youngest daughter will be here sometime after she gets off work, probably around 4:30....then we settle in with the smell of fresh baked cinnamon bread to have a dinner of meatballs and spaghetti (spaghetti squash) and garlic toast with caramel cheese cake for dessert....and watch as many of the old Christmas TV specials as we can stand.

Good, slow Christmas Day morning to you all. We're waiting for that storm but so far all we've got is a strong breeze or high wind. May it last! We're having halibut dinner tonight. Nothing like some fish after the heavy meat meal yesterday evening. :smt114

Merry Christmas everyone! It's a lovely day, currently 6°C and sunny. The dust has settled and the gifts have all been unwrapped, breakfast was just eaten, and now we are all busy doing something. The feasting will begin later and the big dinner will be tomorrow. And then it's all over again for another year. Have a great day everyone, may you all be blessed with good food and family today.

We didn't have snow for Christmas but have had rain and thunderstorms the last 24 hours and rain is to stay around for the next to days. I feel sorry for those in the south having all those tornados, storms and floods.
