Sjoerd, sorry I posted Paul Bunyan without an explanation. He was a mythical woodsman with Babe the Blue Ox. Since he was a woodcutter, I was likening my hacking at hackberry tree starts to his efforts.
Your lottie, as always, looks stupendous!

Good Monday morning all. Currently just 4°C and overcast with strong winds. It feels more like a March morning!
Too cold to work outside today, so I'll be busy inside. The entire weeks looks rather cold so my house should be really clean by Friday haha
Have a great day all :)

All this VE Day coverage reminds me of an incident that happened in the last couple of years of my career, when I worked at the head office of my firm in 1998.
A colleague had inherited his father's house some years before, it was a nice pre-war property in a good area and a corner site.
It had a balustrade wall about a couple of feet high and he'd recently had wrought iron railings errected on top of both walls and matching wrought iron gates.

Soon after he got a visit at the door from a local planning officer, who told him that he needed planning permission to have them and he'd have to have them taken down.

"They've cost me a lot of money."

"It doesn't matter, the byelaws apply here, so they have to come down."

"He said just a minute," disappeared and came back with an A5 photo of the front of the house showing the railings and gate.

"Why are you showing me this?"

    "Turn it over."

On the back was a photography studio stamp and the date 1938. (He brought it in to show me)

"These are the railings and gates you lot stole at the beginning of WW2 to make into Spitfires or whatever.
So I'm not taking them down and when can I expect my compensation cheque?"

    The railings and gates, stayed.

    He didn't get any compensation.

Gracious, our weeds are healthy! I weeded the cucumbers and squash early this morning, and picked lettuce. The beans need weeding--again--and the carrots need thinning/weeding. Guess what I'll be doing until noontime!
Our weather is balmy with temps in the high 70's, intermittent sunshine, and a nice breeze. I may sit on the patio later and pet a cat, or two, or three.

Good Tuesday morning all. Currently -1°C and sunny. It's going to be a cool week.
So my youngest daughter, the skater, that doesn't like to garden, just got a job working at a greenhouse!
The greenhouse isn't open to the public yet due to the pandemic, but it is a small family business with only 4 workers. My daughter will be the 5th worker, which fits into the pandemic guidelines. They are taking phone/email orders and are having curbside pickup and that's where she fits in. It's a part time position, that could lead into a summer job. I think she is very lucky ... a lot of students are having trouble getting jobs! She does seem a little excited ... maybe this will spark an interest in plants/gardening?
I'm headed to the grocery store this morning.
Have a great day all :)

Hate to burst your bubble Netty, but maybe your daughter is excited about the money she will get and not so much about working around plants.:)

Netty, your daughter will learn from working at the greenhouse. Handling plants and interacting with the people who have ordered online and are avid gardeners has to be a good experience for her.
Money is nice, but experience and learning are invaluable!
Didn't do anything outside today--rain, wind, and "iffy" weather. Cleaned house, organized some files, and consoled the cats who wanted to either go out of their shelter to play or come into the house to play.

Yes, I know it's all about the money, but I'm sure in the process she will be learning at least a little about plants and gardening. Then maybe, just maybe, when I'm excited about something garden related someone around here will share my excitement!
Good Morning all. Currently just 2°C and sunny. It's going to be a cold week ... something about the polar vortex hanging around until the middle of next week. It's making it really hard for me to harden off my tomato seedlings. Saturday the high is only 1°C!
2020 certainly is going to be a year to remember.
Have a great day all :)

Good Saturday morning all. Currently -1°C and overcast. The sun was shining when I got up, but soon disappeared. High is only +2°C today, but at least we didn't get snow!
Not sure what to do today ... daughter works today so I won't have any distractions. Maybe I should clean up the craft room ... lots to do in there!
Have a great day all :)

Weeding tomatoes today. The high is to be 74 degrees, so it will be very pleasant working outside. I have some zinnias to transplant and onions to fertilize. We are having quiche for dinner tonight, with a garden fresh green salad. My husband swears his front teeth are growing longer and he has an urge to twitch his nose! With all the eggs we eat I'm surprised we don't cluck . . . .

Had a freeze/frost last night. Was 30º when I got out of bed this morning! Supposed to get up to 59º later though. Crazy weather! So different from last year...winter dragged on forever, we had like 2 days of spring, then summer smacked us in the face in April. This year, we seem to be having a long spring. I'm not complaining though :D

Good Sunday morning all. Currently just 3°C and sunny. I spoke too soon yesterday ... shortly after my post the sky opened up and the snow started to fall. It was literally a blizzard!
Had a few centimetres of snow before it finally stopped, and the winds took over. The snow did disappear, but it was darn COLD! Daughter got a call from the greenhouse to tell her she had the day off (she was thrilled!) and we spent the day inside by the woodstove. Today its a little warmer, but its really not going to be warm until Wednesday or Thursday. UGH!
I am NOT enjoying 2020 so far at all!!

I quit using my chipper shredder. This is so much easier, and our acid clay likes the resulting ash and charcoal.

Beautiful Dirtmechanic! Is that your driveway? Sure looks like a little piece of heaven! Fossy is cute too!
Good Monday morning all. Currently 2°C with light rain. Another couple of days of this cold weather and then its supposed to warm up.This weather has been ridiculous!
Not sure what's on the agenda today. Too cold to do anything outside, and I'm tired of sitting inside. I suppose there is always cleaning to be done, but that's getting old too.
I'll be so glad when I can go out somewhere!
Have a great day all :)

Beautiful day today, temp in the 60's and sunny. Since rain is predicted for tomorrow, I'm trying to get all the small garden jobs done--the ones I've been putting off. As a reward for finally getting after those jobs, I'm going to make some herb butters to stash in the freezer, and make some turkey salad. Warmer weather means cool lunches.
Netty, how is Sargeant? Is he completely recovered from the knucklebone incident?
