We had a hard frost last night. Fortunately, all of the frost tender plants are long done or have been brought inside already. It was close with the squashes and pumpkins - I had them outside for decoration and just brought them in last week. I want to finish building / rebuilding raised beds and filling with soil before it freezes too much. Almost there.

Hi all, it's afternoon already and I'm bracing myself to venture into a couple of shops. I forgot to buy decoration material for the wreaths and I'm going to look for a small cupboard while I'm out anyway. We have rain, wind and 6 deg C. Hope the rest of you are warm and comfy.

Good Tuesday morning all. Currently -7°C and sunny. We woke up to SNOW this morning! Now the sun is shining and the snow is glistening and its such a beautiful day!
I keep looking at the pumpkins, squash and carrots all over my dining room floor and thinking it might be a good day to cook some up and also do some canning.
Have a great day all :)

Netty, have you made squash or pumpkin soup? My recipe was from BBC. Sauté about 1/2 medium onion and some garlic in sauce pan in oil. I use coconut oil for the flavor. add a bouillon cube, plus 2 1/2 cups of cubed squash or pumpkin, and about 1 3/4 cups of water (or, omit bouillon cube and use broth instead of water). Bring to boil, simmer 20 min. Take off flame. Use immersion blender to blend smooth. Garnish with hot sauce or croutons or chopped peanuts or chopped chives.

I've also added left over carrots and cooked the same way. pretty good.

    I think 2 1/2 cups us about 650 ml.

    Do you freeze squash? 2921C45F-8760-46BA-9D38-526AFDEE1E8F.jpeg

Sounds yummy Daniel! I might try a small batch for myself ... I love squash in any form. But no one else in my house would eat that.
Still not sure what to do with all this pumpkin ... one can only have so much pie and bread!
Good Wednesday morning all. Currently -2°C and sunny. I had my shower, my dog walk and my coffee and I'm still not sure what my plan is for today. I guess I'll have another coffee and think about it a little more!
Have a great day all :)

This is shaping up to be a good day! The silver is polished, the table linens are airing, the pie pastry is chilling in the fridge, and the next thing is to pick over the garden. Our Thanksgiving is going to be not only thankful, but filling!
Netty, I'll go through my cookbooks and see if I can find any "new" pumpkin recipes. If so, I'll send them to you.

Netty, I'm thinking about making some pumpkin cornbread muffins. I may have thaw out some more puree - I already thawed one batch for pie.

Sometimes I cube pumpkin or squash. Then sear in a cast iron skillet, and add to soup or stir fry. It takes cooking a bit longer after searing - I add water to the hot skillet (very careful, it splatters) and keep the lid on to steam the seared cubes.

We make our own dog food using chicken thighs, rice and some vegetables using an online recipe. It calls for carrots but I substitute squash or pumpkin. Rufus likes it.

I was reading up on biochar for the garden. Not sure about it. We have fabric squares cut out to make a quilt. That might be something to work on today.

For those members who celebrate it, Happy Thanksgiving! I've been having fun in the kitchen most of the day--a perfect place to be on a chilly, windy day.
Hoping you all have a good evening.

We made half of the big fabric blocks for a queen bed size quilt. And had a Thanksgiving dinner. Happy Thanksgiving!

Good Friday morning all. Currently -2°C and snowing.
I've already gotten 2 Christmas gifts purchased on black Friday sales this morning. The snow falling outside is making me want to do some Christmas decorating today!
On a regular November day I would have said no way, decorating doesn't start until December 1st. But last year has really sucked for my family and so I think we have 2 Christmas's to celebrate this year and I'm starting early!
Have a great day all :)

Well, I have emerged victorious from the kitchen! We had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner (if I do say so myself) and watched a Christmas movie, then the National Dog Show. Claire the Scottish Deerhound won best of show for the second year in a row, which made us very happy, and probably Eileen, too.

Good Sunday morning all. Currently -3°C and snowing. I am missing a mitten, so my left hand was cold after my dog walk. I'm thinking that Sargent hid it yesterday when I went to the neighbors - he frequently hides my clothing when I go somewhere without him. Todays first job is to find my mitten! Then I will begin the huge task of fall cleaning in my bedroom and bedroom closet. Later, I have a new pumpkin fritter recipe to try - thanks MG!
Have a great day all :)

    Good morning, y'all!
I have a happy story to tell about my husband, the good samaritan. The day after Thanksgiving a young man pulled into our drive. He'd had a flat tire but managed to get the spare on, and the spare was low on air. He asked if we had anything to inflate his tire. My husband directed him to the barn gate, opened it, got him parked near enough for the compressor hose to reach the tire, and pulled a tire gauge out of his workshop to make sure the pressure was correct. The young man was so happy, and so thankful. He kept thanking husband until he was almost embarrassed, and then the young lady rolled down her window and took up the litany of thank-yous.
I'm so lucky to have such a good, caring, generous husband--and he likes cats, too!

Good Monday morning all. Currently -8°C and foggy.
We had snow all day yesterday and overnight, and it is foggy and silent outside. Beautiful but a little eerie.
I'm off to the lawyers office this morning and then will stop and do a little Christmas shopping.
Have a great day all :)

Good Tuesday morning all. Currently -1°C and overcast.
Had a lovely dog walk this morning and now the dog is resting by the woodstove and I am enjoying a cup of coffee.
I have a bunch of random things to do this morning, and then it's time to go into town and do some banking. I will probably check out some of the local shops for Christmas gifts as well.
Have a great day all :)
