Rain, rain, glorious rain! We got 1" overnight, and now have 1,000 gallons of rainwater in the cubes and barrels. No hauling buckets today! The temperature is better also, with it being 73 degrees now and predicted to go to "only" 92 this afternoon. I may get out the mukluks and hat with ear flaps!
Hope you all have as good a day as this has started out to be.

Very strange weather morning for us. Thurnderstorms woke us up at 6 am. A little bit of rain, hopefully more will come. It is very muggy outside. It did not cool off below 17 C which is unusual. Fresh Candy onions are becoming onion rings today, and some zucchini will lend itself to bake zucchini sticks for dinner.

Good Saturday morning all. Currently 15°C and sunny.
We got some rain yesterday, thankfully, and now the rain barrels are full again.
I've learned through the years of living in the country to always pay close attention to my dogs sniffer. This morning he caught the scent of something, and even though we kept walking, I was paying close attention. All of a sudden I spotted a bear coming out of the ditch! Stopped dead in my tracks, and so did the bear. My dog let out a low growl and then one mighty WOOF and the bear ran away. Saved by his sniffer again!
I'm going to see my grandbabies this morning <3
Have a great day all :)

Good Sunday morning all. Currently 19°C and overcast. We had a light rain overnight, and there is a chance for some more rain later today.
We had a great visit with the grandbabies yesterday, but today it is canning day! I've had 2 slow cookers going all night with tomatoes for sauce, and I'm also going to can some whole tomatoes. Its going to be a busy day!

I know the work that will be, Netty.
Wishing you the strength and stamina the chore requires.
I personally would not object to a few pics of your handiwork.Bonne chance.

I need a helper I can trust not to pull out flowers and seedlings, I had someone pull out a couple of tree peony’s. It’s never worth it. Plus the young guys can barely keep up with me…very frustrating… Other than that I have very good routine to take small breaks during the seasonal chores.

Pacnorwest, I know how frustrating getting help can be. When we had a large garden in upstate NY, so many visitors offered to come "help" me. I told them it would take me longer to train them that it would to just do the work myself.
Take and enjoy your small breaks--admire what you have accomplished!

Very true. Even to get leaf clean up …..a simple task …well they remove all the bark chips, rocks and expose bare earth using their darn huge leaf blowers. Costs me more money in the long run. What a pain. It your try and teach them OMG they know it all.. become offended and don’t show up for the next appt.

I will not ever have any more large garden tours. Someone knocked over my mail box at the street and some kids were throwing ice cubes at the horses and caused such fear by chasing them that one horse fell hard against something and sliced his shoulder about a 3” long & a deep wound. Huge vet bill. And no one ever fessed up to hitting my mail box. When I saw the kids … I almost smacked the blank out of them…
Just close friends only and small groups from now on, no more huge tours or garden luncheons…

It's mid-afternoon on Monday, and we are having a beautiful rain! I feel for Dallas and Ft. Worth, which are flooded, but here south of the metroplex we needed rain so badly, and have gotten two nice rains.
We'll have a nice dinner tonight, and go to sleep happily, knowing we don't have to haul water tomorrow! The cats may not be so pleased .

Good Monday afternoon all. Currently 22°c and raining. RAINING!! Glorious ground soaking rain! I had to run out quick and pick all the ripe-ish tomatoes so they wouldn't split!
I left work early and got a bunch of random tasks done (finally!!) and now I'm making dinner before we head to the rink.

THIS is exactly why I am working alone this year! Helpers pulling out seedlings, or pruning shrubs at the wrong time, or too short, or just being know-it-alls. I get so much more work done when I'm alone! Last fall I was raking leaves into the gardens for winter protection/nutrients and the maintenance department was blowing them all out!! UGH
Have a great day all :)

Ah yes, and then there are the "gimme" garden visitors. One lady, in the middle of a garden tour, wanted to cut roses to make a corsage for her son's prom date. I told her if he would come and put in a full day's work under my supervision, I'd pay him enough to buy a corsage. Need I tell you I never saw the boy?

    Great story, Jane.
I don’t think there is a dutch person alive that doesn’t like free stuff, but not to the extent that they would ever ask for flowers or veg/fruit. They just do not do it. When I read your piece here, It was funny to me, but more surprising was that someone actually asked you. It is interesting to note cultural differences.

Good Tuesday afternoon all. Currently 25°C and sunny.
Another busy day, along with a chiropractic appointment, and now I've decided that dinner will be Delissio pizza! Its not pizzeria pizza, but its not bad, and I dont feel like cooking!
I really don't feel like doing much, so I think it may be a relaxing night.
Have a great day all :)

Overcast and smoke haze today, but at least cooler. Only 26 today. It's been lows of below ten, and highs of mid thirties. Downy mildew lurks about with these conditions. It has been a long time since such a warm/hot fall. Leaves are yellowing and dropping. Robins are gone, and Nuthatches and Chickadees are coming back. The Grosbeaks are still stuffing their young and teaching them to eat on their own. Urgently hahaha

I read the many stories of misguided garden help, leaf blowers and tours with people who don't seem to have a lot of respect....seems quite surreal. The closest I've come to a well intentioned garden whoops was my late step mom pulling up baby leeks for dinner thinking they were green onions. ( they replanted okay - thankfully).

I have a sign passed down to me from a dear friend who ran a market garden. It says "don't just stand there....WEED!" She said once she had a customer who dropped to her knees and said " I don't mind weeding" and cleaned up her strawberry patch. She thought it odd at the time, but then realized she asked for it with the sign, and someone missed having a garden. Maybe I just need someone to come way out here and read the sign. :) I've put it in my strawberry patch...just encase a human bean should show up. ( And there are some weeds around it.) So far no takers.
