The Good Day All Thread

This interests me Netty. I have always frozen mine. I do have a pressure canner, but never thought to do this. Can you share your recipe/steps?

 

A snowy -22 this morning. I made Angus some booties a couple years ago out of lined gloves. ( Cut the fingers off, sewed the palm shut, trimmed to fit his feet, and added velcro at the top). He's a big hairy guy, but he likes his booties.( He looks pretty funny when he wears them because he prances, wags his tail with his floppy ears bobbing). When he rolls in the snow, his booties are up in the air kicking around. Makes me laugh every time - looks like jazz hands without the fingers.

He still likes to be the one who decides if it is time for booties....so he will go out in the morning, test the temps, and either come right back in and lay down, sticking his paws up to get his booties on - or he makes a run for it. -14 C seems to be his cut off for running for it.

Last little bit of baking this AM before my Son hopefully comes. Some buns, and some mint chocolate rice krispie squares ( his fave). Shovelling the deck and stairs, and filling up the bird feeders for the Chickadees and Junkos first.

 

Good Tuesday morning all. Currently -6°C and overcast.
The sky is very dark, like there is a good rain or snow coming. Weatherman is already warning about a storm that might ruin Christmas, calling it a "historic" storm and "Extensive utility outages are possible". They are advising against travel. If this storm hits when and how predicted, this will be the 3rd Family Christmas dinner in a row cancelled. I really hope they are wrong, as my sister and I are determined to have a wonderful family Christmas in memory of our parents this year.

Poor Netty's part of Canada is expecting a historic winter storm with snow. Snow can be crippling. :-(
Mine is experiencing record breaking Arctic air. We normally get a few boughts of -30s a year. School buses don't run at -32. The kids are thrilled because it is -42 in town...so no school although teachers still will be there to keep the doors open. We have the largest school district in BC with many kids travelling over an hour to school by bus. Everyone is home in their jammies today.

More Arctic Air is expected today and tonight. They are calling for -45 C here. More northern communities are seeing -50 right now. We have a windchill of - 57 predicted tonight, so everyone is asked to stay in if possible. Hubby has a long waited for appointment in the city tomorrow. He will travel alone so that I can keep the fires going. Son will leave a day early and travel in tandem with him as far as his Nana and Poppas house. We tried rescheduling the appointment but it would be another three months.

Stay warm and cozy everyone. Mandatory PJs and fuzzy socks here today.

 

Good morning! We've got +4C / 39F, and it's raining. The snow's melting fast and the ice that covered the roads yesterday is almost gone already. Stay safe, Netty! I hope the weather stops quickly and you can enjoy your family Christmas this year. Crikey, Melody Mc., those temps are inland mountains or Kautokeino, Finnmark Norway temps. I've only experienced -30C once in my life. Don't mind if I never do again. Have a safe Wednesday all.

 

Good Wednesday morning all. Currently -8°C and sunny. Happy Winter solstice everyone! Tomorrow the days start getting longer!
A very busy day today! We are baking cookies this morning, doing a bit of shopping this afternoon, and then skating tonight, where we will be having a Christmas skate with Santa.
Tomorrow is errand and shopping day, and then home before the big storm hits on Thursday afternoon. At this point, weatherman is saying rain Thursday afternoon with temperatures plummeting and flash freezing occurring. Then the winds kick up and snow begins, heavy at times, causing white outs, drifting snow and accumulation. Usually when they make a big deal about storms they don't happen so I'm hoping that is the case. Our family dinner is scheduled for Christmas Eve so we are still holding out hope that snow cleanup will be done before dinner and that we will still have power. The power of positive thinking?

Netty, our best hopes are for you and your family dinner! We, too, are facing an arctic blast which is predicted to arrive tomorrow afternoon, giving us single digit temperatures coupled with wind chills in the minus figures. We have taken all the precautions we can, and will survive!
I've triple-checked my Christmas Eve and Day recipes and have everything needed on hand. I'll be baking pumpkin pie, pot roast for Eve, and ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, and more pie for the Day. Gosh, I love the holidays! I get to bake, cook, and plan menus. Does it get any better than that?

 

@marlingardener So wonderful to see you here Lady J. It sounds like the kitchen is getting warmed up for a couple of wonderful feasts! @Droopy ...I definitely have a case of ChillyBumItis going on. I will be glad to see it warm up.

-42 C here this AM without the windchill. One more night of cold and then Mother Nature loosens her grip and we warm up to more seasonal temps. The extension cord to plug in my son's car froze stiff and stood out straight 4 ft but we managed to get it plugged in without breaking the cord.

He and I had fun and did the "boiling water throw" before he left. I was a little nervous, but he is young and invincible. He did decide to not throw it over his head thankfully. I've attached a video of what some do. The air was -41 when we did it and it turned to steam instantly. It was pretty cool. UNTIL.....darling son gave a little extra chuck of the last in the pot. It had cooled too much and went straight up, and some came back and splashed on the window. He ducked and got some on the back of his parka. We both were OH OH....please don't break Mr. Window and it froze instantly. We took turns with a scraper and a blow dryer on low getting the ice off off the window and screen, and now it is as good as new. And there is no evidence remaining ( that would have to be explained) of our foolhardy mistake of being too close to the house.

It’s super chilly today expecting ice.snow wind storm the artic front is coming soon… YIKES…I have to get the heating coils on the scuppers so the ice/snow doesn’t get built up causing water to flow over the sides of the perimeter of the roof instead of the downspouts. Not a big deal just set up two or three on each side get up there now while the sun is out before the roof ices up…
I mostly worry about my small tree collection of rare trees. Some of the ice snow is so wet and heavy branched will pop off the tree . The forest next door the branches falling from heavy snow storms sounds like popcorn popping as the sound echoes thru the woods.

Now there is a heck of an idea Pac! Brilliant!

I will send that idea along to my son. I may get my courage up and try it once Hubby is back home. hahahaha I will keep you posted.

Reminds me of when it would snow at Easter and the kids and I would make snowmen and paint them with food colouring in water.

Good Thursday morning all. Currently -8°C and overcast and windy.
I'm up and ready to head into town to get all my groceries and last minute items. I hope to be home around lunch time and hopefully the storm doesn't start until after that.
I told DH to make sure we have lots of gas for the generator and plow truck, and my son to bring in lots of firewood. I'm bringing home the food and daughter is cleaning the house. We've got everything under control here haha (hope I didn't jinx us saying that!)

Netty…stay safe.. and no power outages… we are expecting the artic front …ice rain and snow. I already got everything set and ready even loaded up some firewood in case of power outage . Yeap… I’ts always something.

 

Like Pacnorwest, we brought in more firewood and called an elderly neighbor to tell her if the power goes out we will bring her home with us to stay warm in front of the stove and have a hot meal. I've learned to cook on coals in a cast iron pan! Even difficult circumstances can be a learning experience . . . .
The cat is inside for the duration, we have lots of candles and three solar powered luminas, and our fingers crossed that we don't have to use them!
