The Good Day All Thread

Windy and cool. The temperature has dropped to the 70s for a high. The neighbors wind chimes singing perpetually. Usually phase them out, but people noticed them on a Zoom call this evening and now the are in my conscious hearing. Funny how the mind notices things.

 

Jewell same temps here too. And overcast . Did’t have to worry so much about watering the garden. We have limited access to water pumped from the well and held in a 2200 gallon cistern holding tank from the well. In summers the water table drops and can take a full day to refill. I have all the flower beds on timers and soakers on a computer program different garden zones automatically are watered . I’ve been fixing hoses all day and connectors. UGH!

How do you water your garden?

 

I woke up hearing the soft rain falling. Love it. The land will benefit from the awaited moisture. I very fine day indeed.

@Pacnorwest I have lightweight hoses scattered around and laid out for the summer from a multi shutoff adapter. With only two spigots I do a lot of walking from hose-end to spigot. Was very happy to find the second facet hidden in a fern and rose bush long after we moved in. Had a plumber retrofit it so it completely drains in the winter. Old house with lots of peculiarities.

 

We haven't had to worry about watering the gardens, which is strange for this time of year in Texas. It rained yesterday afternoon, so I am waiting for things to dry out a bit before I go hunt down ripe cherry tomatoes and tie up the other tomato plants, again.
It is a lovely day with sunshine, a very light breeze, and no prospect of either house cleaning nor laundry!

Jewell finding another hidden faucet for watering the garden must have been a highlight at that time. Are you on city water?
I think older homes have so much more appeal and character than cookie cutter homes. Your remodeling has reflected your tastes and personality and that’s the beauty of your home.
We are on well water and I have the garden water on a separate water line to not run thru the house filters and black light. There are a lot of minerals in the well water for the garden plants . Much better to have access to unfiltered well water.

It started raining last night … very unusual … we were just starting to hit a dangerous level entering a drought again and a higher level in a wildfire zone. It’s been raining all day and the weather guessers totally missed this storm. At least the well pump gets a rest for a few days. The lawns had started to go dormant and hope they green up.

I did manage to get a second cutting done of the grass hay in the pastures and set several mole traps …ground squirrels have just about wiped out half of my peony roots . Never a dull moment. Today I’m just sittin out the rain enjoying the new ole factory in the air from the rain.

 

Good Saturday morning all. Currently 14°C and cloudy. There is a lovely breeze and for the first time all week I can't smell wildfire smoke. We had a light shower overnight, not enough to water anything, but every little bit helps fill my 8 rain barrels. I wanted to head over and see the grandkids today, but then I remembered that I have a water truck coming to fill our pool, which isn't put up yet! I'll get that up and then do all the other yard chores so that I can go over and see them tomorrow. Always so much to do!!

Still overcast and rainy.

 

Good Sunday morning all. Currently 16°C and overcast.
Yesterday I finally got all my veggie crops planted, and with the case of the beans re-planted. It seems to happen every year with my beans ... I plant them and they dont grow so I have to resow them. Hopefully they come up this time! All the raised beds were weeded as well, and its starting to look good out there. The water truck also came and filled the pool. Today I'm heading over to see my grandkids (and their parents). Looks like we are finally going to get some rain too!

How many gallons of water does your pool hold? Do you empty the pool every year?
We just used a cover for the concrete pool. Always kept the pump running during winters so the under ground lines don’t freeze. It seemed to be a gigantic bug collector and a few mice and squirrels. Pools are a lot of work in summers to keep up. I’m glad we don’t have a pool at this house. Now just having a small hot tub is enough of a hassle. Keeping the water ph balanced, chemicals and filters cleaned and the vacuum tired of the whole thing.
I am going to have the above ground hot tub removed soon. Someone to come and chop it up and carry it away…
Pools are fun with the kids and grand kids in summers and cookouts. Builds nice memories.

 

Good monday morning all. Currently 13°C and raining. Glorious rain, we have needed rain so badly! I hope this helps with the forest fires that are ongoing in northern Ontario and Quebec. I also hope it helps my beans germinate haha Thanks for the garden fairies Pacnorwest!
Because its going to be an all day rain event, I have the day off work! Hopefully I can get some odds and ends done today, including some errands. I also want to pick up tickets to the upcoming Garden Tour in my town, scheduled for mid July. Its the first one since before the lockdowns, and I'm excited to get out and see some gardens!

Our pool holds just over 6000 gallons. We do take it down every fall and put it away somewhere safe for the winter. We get a lot of snow and high winds in the winter and so that is just one less thing to worry about during the winter. Less wear on the pool, and less chance for damage as well as fresh water every year.

Naturally I have to ask if your garden is included. From what you have shown, I think it is lovely and interesting. You have variety.

Netty… thanks for getting back about your pool. I see now with above ground pool the winters can be very destructive. Reason I asked is our other house pool help 25000 gallons of water. We kept it ph balanced year round. Wish I had it now that we are in a wildfire district just mapped out by the state. All that water would come in handy. We do have 3200 gallons in our cistern holds water pumped up from the well to the house. We have the water in ground cistern on record at the fire station if they need the water. The firefighters can pump the water from the holding tanks .
I’m keeping my fingers crossed this summer it doesn’t need to be used. I keep the garden watered well and damp just for that reason.

@Clay_22 - well done! I have a friend that does a motorcycle ride for MS every year. The community support, awareness and fundraising is so vital. Looks like everyone had fun - lots of smiles.
