September has arrived with lower temperatures. We had the house open this morning for a while--what a pleasure!
We were surrounded by gunfire this morning--it's opening day of dove season. Why anyone wants to shoot a bird that yields one bite of meat is beyond me, but then we feed birds, we do not feed on them. We have "No trespassing, no hunting, go away" signs on our fences. My husband is thinking of putting up another sign saying "Don't worry about the dog, worry about my wife. She has a long rifle and a short temper". Just kidding, I think.
We are picking apples today so depending on how many are ready to be picked, I may make applesauce for the freezer tomorrow.
Hope you all have a good Friday and a lovely weekend!

A long rifle and a short fuse is a dangerous combination. Your man included you in the equation…possibly implying that that in some way makes a trespassing an even more dangerous thing to try on. I am convinced.

Good Saturday morning all. Currently just 14°C and overcast. It wont last long as the sun will be out and we will be starting a 6 day long heatwave. Of course this is the weekend I had planned to do my canning! I'm doing tomato sauce this morning, then I'll be saucing the plums and apples. After that I'll head out to the garden and harvest more beans, cucamelons, and tomatillos. Perhaps some herbs too, that I'll put in the dehydrator.
Have a great day all :)

Good Sunday morning all. Currently 21°C and sunny.
Tomato sauce and plum sauce was made and canned for shelf storage. Apples were not doing well after sitting 2 weeks in my basement. They were a strange color and texture so out to the compost they went. They grew on a tree that popped up in my driveway a few years back ... this was the first year I was able to harvest the apples. They were an early yellow apple, and had kind of a grainy texture but I thought they would be great for pies. My neighbor seems to have to mother of this tree and she tells me that they have a very short shelf life but are great for pies when fresh off the tree. I'll remember that next year. I guess I'll have to wait for my other apples to be ready to harvest.
Off to see my grandson for his 4th birthday today.
Have a great day all :)

It’s been chilly here and rainy the past few days. Had to run out and pick a couple baskets of grapes.
So many couldn’t get them all before it rains again. IMG_2928.jpeg

Fall is definitely in the air here. The leaves are all changing, the chickadees and grey jays are back. Squirrels are squirrelly. I've had a few frosts already, but I'm expecting a harder one in a couple of days. There is a heavy dew and mist every morning, and it's one of Angus and I's favourite times for early morning walks.

In the field there is a cluster of little bushes that fill up all summer with tiny little spider webs. The spiders are so small that I have not been able to see them, but they build these elaborate nest traps hoping for a bug. I'm very glad as they eat the noseeums and some black flies, which eat me. The webs are not visible during the day, but in the morning mist they show themselves. The web traps are smaller than my hand.

Angus and I treat them as a roundabout, ( partly out of respect for the hard work put into them, partly as "ewwwww" ) but I always marvel at seeing them in the early morning.

    Melody, that is magical!
It's really hot again today, and there won't be any relief until next week. We have the chicken coop fans on medium and made sure there was plenty of water. The hens don't eat a lot during this weather, but they sure do drink! Could it have something to do with the drop or two of gin added to their water?
Picked some cherry tomatoes to have with tonight's salad. Even with the air conditioning, we don't feel like having a hot meal.
There's a joke going around--the devil came to Texas, but returned to hell to cool off.
    Hope your days go well!

Oh Marlin, I didn’t get the memo. He returned though, right.

Mel—like Jane said, it is magical to see.

Pac— those grapes look really good. I could eat a big bowl of those right now!

Happy Friday everyone! I'm feeling very virtuous--I cleaned the refrigerator. After a month's worth of rescued garden vegetables in the vegetable drawer and moving things around on the shelves my fridge would not have passed a health inspection!
One advantage to cleaning the refrigerator is that it's cold in there! Lately anything below 85 degrees is a cause for joy.
Sjoerd, yes the devil did go back to hell, saying he wasn't coming back to Texas until November. Boy, is he in for a surprose!

Good Saturday morning all. Currently 14°C and sunny. Horribly hot week, but today is cool. I've got a pot of tomato sauce on the stove for canning, and the pressure cooker is heating up. Picked a pail of jalapenos and later on they will be cowboy candy. More tomatoes to pick and turn into sauce later on, and there are beets ready to harvest. Canning will be over soon ... the garden is getting tired and the tomatoes have blight.
I'll be working on Skating Club raffle tickets while the jars are in the canner.
Have a great day all :)

Wow Netty, that is a lot of canning/cooking to do. Glad it's cooler for you today. Do you make pickled beets?
I did one of my very favorite things this morning. I made out my list of Christmas cookies and breads, and a list of ingredients to get shortly before baking the goodies. I took inventory in the kitchen, and I won't need to get much, just more flour and apples and oranges. One can never be too early to make out one's Christmas list!
Hope you all find something favorite to do today!

Good Sunday morning all. Currently 17°C and overcast.
Rough day of canning yesterday ... none of my tomato jars sealed for some reason, and my cowboy candy isn't hot! I knew enough to quit when I was ahead so I used a couple jars of sauce and made lasagna for dinner. I'll be re-processing the others today, along with the tomatoes that have been in the slow cooker all night. I didn't harvest the beets yet, but really should, and I'll do some pickled beets when I do. I pulled out one raised bed of tomatoes that got blight and also cleaned up the cucumber bed that was done. Gardening season is slowing down! I also got 500 raffle tickets printed, and today I'll try to do another 500.
Wow MG, the last thing on my mind right now is Christmas! haha
Have a great day all :)

Hallelujah, we have temperature at 70 degrees, and a chance of rain during the coming week! It is so very nice to have the house open with fresh air that isn't scorching. Netty, it's beginning to feel a lot more like Christmas! My silver tongued husband said that even with a breeze, going outside was like standing in front of a blow dry hair dryer. So descriptive!
I got energetic and did some kitchen de-cluttering, putting unused utensils and dishes in a box to take to the food bank/thrift store. Next item on the agenda is to harvest, chop, and freeze basil. The food bank won't accept basil. :crying:
    Enjoy your day!
