@Netty - I'm glad you're staying away from trees with that wind. And have a day at home :)

We had high winds all day yesterday and into about 2 am. It blew the lid off of my burning barrel, took the tarps off a shed and the snow plough, sent snow shovels across the yard and toppled many trees. The power was out from 1 pm to 6 pm. Then it went out again at 7:00 pm and was off until 1:30 am. Our generator came on and we had lights and water. We've only had the generator about 8 years and it is the best investment we ever made. With the hour and a half drive to the town, the crew for the first outage was almost back to town when the second outage happened.

At about 9 PM a large power truck pulled into the yard. He was a contractor to the government power company and did not know that we did not have cell phone service out here. He caught a glimpse of my bright grow lights through the trees and came to ask to use our phone. He had to ask for more crews to come and help remove trees and restring wires. I also gave him my wifi password so he came into the yard a few times after to get in touch with folks and family.

Around 10 pm I took some coffee and cookies out to the crew - they were about half a km away. I'm surprised they kept working through the wind - I would have called it for the night.

Today will be a drive to go and scout firewood from the windstorm. :)

    Stay safe Netty.

Melody_ what an exhausting day. I saw that storm on my weather channel and on yahoo news. A really serious storm with power outages and damage thru out the area and different storms that hit the US causing flooding and outages. Not in my area.
These severe storms cause havoc to surrounding landscape. Sounds like almost tornado winds I read 72mph winds and huge wind gusts.. We get those occasionally here too. Sorry you lost power and glad your generator kicked in and you all safe and sound. Very Scary are those severe wind/snow storms….

Very thoughtful to take snacks out to the crew. I bet they are your buds for life.
Very glad you had no serious damage from a very strong storm.

Arctic front to hit British Columbia .

Good morning everyone, feeling a bit low today as my visit to see my brother in hospital yesterday was a very distressing one.
He's been in hospital for almost 3 weeks now and the whole environment is too confusing for him and he was in constant tears . He kept asking me why was he there...in his old school !! He also kept asking for Mum and Dad ( long gone) too. He was very upset because he thinks he has nowhere else to go and stay , apart from here in his old school !! :( :(
I spent the time just hugging him and trying to explain the current reason he was in hospital for...he just couldn't believe that he was in hospital and not at school!!

Luckily I have loads of pics on my phone so he became a bit calmer when I showed him the photos of him in his lovely new apartment that he bought almost 3 years ago on an assisted living complex, and pic of his pet budgie who we assured him was being well cared for and was waiting for his return home.

He is still relatively young, early 60s but was diagnosed 4years ago with Alzheimer's....and these last months have seen a rapid deterioration ,such a cruel, cruel disease. I just long to have my lovely kind baby brother back and for him to experience peace and happiness once more.
We are seeing him again tomorrow and are really hoping his mind will be in a better place and we'll get to see his funny mischievous side and his smile back on his face. Fingers crossed.

Good Thursday morning all. Currently 2°C and overcast. We had about 10 cm of snow dumped on us last night, but it is melting and I doubt the plow trucks will be out today. I have another day off work today due to the snow, and I'm ok with that ... lots to do around here!
Have a great day all :)

Netty, I always dreaded snow, but in your case I can see why you would welcome it!
I'm baking French bread today. Although it's sunny, it is chilly so a warm scented kitchen will be good. Perhaps later I'll go out and harvest some parsley and thyme. If it doesn't warm up quite a bit, the herbs are on their own!
Hope you all have a good day and can do what you wish when you wish.

Oreti— It was a moving account of your visit with your brother. It is indeed a cruel illness. It sounds like you are able to place him at ease a bit with your fotos, conversation and hugs. He is so fortunate to have family that can help him deal with the unhappiness, fears and irritations that come and go.
    Here’s wishing you strength. Chapeau.

@Oreti - that illness is very hard on the heart - it sounds like you handled the situation with love and grace and gave him some peace in the moment. I'm thinking of you.

Today is a town day with a little later start which is nice. I have my first Mom Visit with my daughter today while Hubby has an appointment. I have to pinch myself that she is so close now. I get to meet my Grand Cat today as well. ( Benadryl required but worth it). We were -4 last night so the mud on the logging road will be frozen which is also nice. Our white truck is not white at all.

Netty I thought winds were your worry - I was surprised to hear of snow! We've swapped spots in Mother Nature. :) Either way I'm happy you get a couple of days at home.

Thank you @Sjoerd , @Pacnorwest and @Melody Mc. for your kind and supportive words, so very appreciated.

Today some encouraging news was announced here today.

    https://uk.style.yahoo.com/signs-alzheimers-dementia-new-blood-test-112128890.html

I really hope this could be the beginning of a wonderful start to really early diagnosess and the ability to stem the flow of this brain devouring illness.

I've been part of a nationwide study for the last 4 years on cognitive impairment / decline as we age and hope that the little bit I'm doing will one day help to significantly slow down or better still stop this horrid disease once and for all.

To add to my lovely brother's complicated needs issues is the fact that he is severely disabled from RA as well. He was diagnosed with that in his early teens and has had most joints either replaced ( several times over) or has them permanently fused . He had to pack up working in his 30s and can now hardly walk even with his crutches. Life has dealt him a very raw deal, yet he's never complained and was always and still can be chirpy.

I feel shamed whenever I have a moan about things, it puts everything into perspective.

    Have a great visit, Oreti.
I wonder what type of restaurant you and your man will find.

It's a bright sunshiny cool morning this morning. And I'm so excited! ( doesn't take much these days - but happiness does feed happiness :) )

I spent the morning baking raspberry jelly Split Seconds, Chocolate Chip Cookies and Mint Chocolate Rice Krispie squares as a thank you to my friend with the plant and tree nursery. I had a really lovely visit with the friend that runs the plant nursery - it is all a one woman amazing show with a little help from time to time putting dirt in six packs from family. I learned so much. I wish I had an ounce of her energy! It is so beautiful to visit her and her greenhouse. Life hasn't let me the last four years, but I'm hoping to spend time with her next Feb and help her - for each other's company and to learn more.

She has a plastic large hoop house with roll up sides, a wood furnace, fans, and grow lights that come on to augment the lack of daylight until the sunlight is more abundant. My head is still spinning from my time there and my face hurts from smiling.

She and her family that own and run the tree nursery are providing me with some bales of soil for a fraction of the cost of what I can get commercially and I'm so grateful. This means my tomatoes will flourish this year for the first time in a long time. I will have a complete fresh start on new soil after years of fighting to recover from three replacements of herbicide contamination from soil, compost and manure.

I also have some flowers to gift that I started from seed that she doesn't have, and some perennials. She has built a new home so she is glad for new things in her garden.

Now the fun will start....digging out the old bed in the greenhouse hahaha. My daughter comes to visit next weekend and has offered the help of a young back. I'll take her up on that. :)

@Netty - you and your snow made the news! Ontario as well as Quebec's snow. I often catch the news from the Yukon in the evenings and you even made their news. :) Hubby says that what a "Nor'easter" can be wind and snow. I thought it was just wind. Hope all is well there - you, yours and the plants. I can see why they asked people to stay home.
