@Netty much of the Midwest to the eastern part of the US has been under snow storm alert for several days.
Snow can be beautiful and a hazard. Sending good vibes your way. Stay safe.

You made it to the other side @Netty! Congratulations! That is a LOT of snow and a LOT of work.

That is a beautiful picture of Thunder. Hubby is very partial to shepherds. - he loved the photo. To quote "WOW! What a beautiful dog!"
The promise is he gets puppy pick next time around the puppy go round.

Today I sorted the onions, and took out any that looked like it was getting ready to sprout. The large Aisle Craig and Expedition don't keep much past January. The next few days will be French onion soup, caramelized onions and diced onions for the freezer. Thank goodness they are sweet onions, so not teary. There are two laundry baskets of onions to process.

I managed the first long walk in a long time, and it felt great. :)

Mel—Congrats on being able to make that long walk. A nice bracing walk and a frisse neus. Just the ticket.

Did you have many dodgy onions?

Thanks Sjoerd. It was good for my soul, that's for sure.

All of my onions that were soft ball size ( 4- 5 inch diameter ) are beginning to show signs of softness ( a little green bit at the top or a not as tight of a skin). The smaller keeping onions are still doing great. I kept about 10 of the larger ones that didn't have green showing and were in the best shape. They will live in the refrigerator drawer now.

I have some seed for next year that is supposed to be one of best long day keeping onions available. They are smaller and globe shaped. "Patterson onion seeds produce some of the finest storage onions with very round shape, good uniformity, and strong skins that allow many months of storage.". I'm hoping they will be great keepers.

I do have a soft spot for the larger milder onions though. Every onion has it's place. :)

I have a chopping volunteer tomorrow that is excited for French Onion Soup, with the question mark of " will we be putting lots in the freezer for later?"hahaha I'm using up some different stocks to make it- some beef, venison and maybe one with lamb stock if needed.

Good Wednesday morning all. Currently -17°C and clear. The wind is blowing and I'm almost afraid to check the state of the driveway. Yesterday, I had to take the snowblower down the driveway to get rid of some drifts. Then I spent almost an hour clearing out a wide path to the back door. In December I bought 2 couches online and figured I had better make sure there was a clear way to the door. After I was done I found a message on my phone that delivery was scheduled for mid February. I called right back and cancelled them ... who the heck wants to wait 2 months for delivery? I'll head to a local store and pick something in stock. Very disappointing, they should have mentioned the long delivery when they were ordered.
Today, we are off to the dressmaker to have DD's skating dress shortened, then off to the rink tonight.
Have a great day all :)

Good chilly morning to you all! Our local weather forecasters are having a field day, trying to scare the daylights out of everyone. Night temperatures have been in the upper 20's, and daytime has been in the high 30's and low 40's. There is a remote possibility of sleet or a skiff of snow, and all the forecasters are telling us to stay in if possible, and to have "emergency kits" of food, blankets, water, and a snow shovel in the car. Has anyone seen a snow shovel for sale in Texas? The department of transportation is out "brining" the highways. A mixture of salt and water is sprayed on the otherwise dry highways. County roads are sanded, to the point one expects to see camels walking around. If you can't overreact there's no reason to react at all!
So today we are staying inside, preparing our "emergency kit", and having hot soup for lunch. Timi the cat is sacked out on the bed. I hope the sunshine coming in the door doesn't bother her.
For those of you with serious weather, stay safe and as warm as possible.

Netty— How irritating is that ! I would have done the same; however, I would not buy a sofa without having sat on it. Haha. I’m a nutter that way.
Good luck locally, at least you can ask them directly how long the wait will be, and if you deem it too long, just ask to buy the showroom model….for a reduced price of course.

Mel— so, you are the onion queen. I really like how you do with your onions. We keep our onions in the garage under our apt., and bring more to keep in the fridge as we use them.

Onions that go soft…mmmm not a good sign there. At least you have no signs of fungus, I assume.

Marlin— i hate it when wether people try and scare folk.
Interesting that we use the same term for salting the roads (pekelen). Our municipality spreads a mix of salt and sand if and when we would get snow.
