The rain rain rain came down down down...

Wow CritterPainter, I had no idea how bad it really was there!
Unfortunately, we are hearing more and more about these kind of natural disasters...

 

Don't mean to sound bitter, but if this had happened in a bigger city, like up in Seattle, I'd lay odds that there would be alot more news about it. Towns like Boistfort, PeEll, and Adna, they just aren't that high-profile.

 

Vent it here, Mary, both bitterness and relief. I lack words, it's just horrifying. And you're probably right about not getting a lot of coverage since only small towns are hit.

 

I thought about you when it was going on and hoped you all were safe.

 

Thanks, Bethie! I went down yesterday- it was so surreal. I was noticing a few big puddles, but thinking, it doesn't look like this area was hit too bad. Then I crossed some invisible line, where the homes looked fine on one block, but on the next every one had carpets and ruined belongings stacked on the curb. It got worse as I went. At my friends house, she was scrubbing away in the kitchen. I really wanted to help but she kept insisting she was fine- I think she just wanted to talk it out. Her subflooring was all soaked and ruined. An interior wall has a huge gap at the top which probably means her foundation is damaged. She showed me lots of photos on her digi camera, her cats all huddled on the island of her sofa to keep dry, the mud on everything. I was only there about an hour- one problem came up that I was able to jump in and fix but it was a literal drop in the bucket. So then I drove to where my other friend has a couple of rentals- the houses on that road are still surrounded by water so she was probably at the hardware store. I was feeling pretty useless and a cold coming on so I just slunk home again. This was at the edge of it all, the damage gets worse as you go in. But I chose not to take any pictures. That was the last thing those people need.
A bright spot, though, is that at the first place, she mentioned the inspector for her flood insurance was coming- she was barely damaged by the flood 10 years ago so they didn't cancel her. Probably will this time but I suspect her house will be raised up this time.
It snowed rather heavy this morning.
