That is correct, angmf. There are the Thanksgiving Cactus, Christmas Cactus and Easter Cactus. In fact the group is sometimes called "the Holiday Cacti".
how to know? How exactly do you know what you have, is it by bloom time? Also heard the leaves are a bit different? I also have two of these that are blooming now and am guessing they would be thanksgiving cactus? Just not sure.
Well ideally, it's when they bloom, as their nickname suggests...however here in Holland, mine all bloom at different times and don't actually fall very close to the holiday dates. I find the surest way to identify the few that I have is by the bloom. I just look at the bloom and then research that for the Latin name. I might have much better results with my Cacti if only I would handle them as the pro's suggest, but I am primarily an outdoor gardner and so I tend to just let the house plants 'do their thing', as they say. I do know that with special handling, these wonderful plants can; in fact, bloom more than once per year. While practically all Dutch people have loads of houseplants, I purposly chose ones that I didn't require much care. I can be satisfied with one blooming per year so I just let them sit. I am a pretty busy fellow, but one day I hope that I will have less to do and can spend more time with these interesting and exotic houseplants
I'm sorry angmf, I do not know. We are on the approximate latitudional line as New York State I think. I believe that the european zones are zoned a bit differently than there. I have just never taken the trouble to look it up. I know that is a bit lax of me, but it has never played a role in how I garden, you see.
Sjoerd, they are gorgeous! I had some of them back in the States. My mother-in-law grows them, I will have to post some pics of hers when I go back in December for a visit. Angmf2233, I have purchased Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti but sometimes they bloomed at the same time, sometimes early or late. I was trying for blooms at different times but I was not successful. I think I should have moved mine more often. I know my mother-in-law and my mother both move theirs from window to porch, etc at different times of the year and they were able to have flowers blooming in succession.
