I remember catching lightning bugs. I always hoped to catch enough in a jar to light up my room. I never did but it wasn't for lack of trying.

As a kid I fished without a licence, basically walked and wandered where I wanted to go, knew everybody on the road and they all knew me too. Used my imagination more than toys and turned the pages of whatever book I could lay my hands on. ;) Slept outside on the front porch in summer as it was too hot inside the house and did chores (hard ones) daily.

Ronni, it's the 3rd stage in the life of a frog..... eggs, tadpoles, polliwogs then frogs. At least that's what I have always heard.

I'm getting old too. I remember when we had to dial the central, give the number we wanted the call put through to and then talk while all the while thinking that somebody was probably listening. We had a butcher, baker and blacksmith just down the road. I loved watching the blacksmith work. We didn't need a fishmonger. We had a boat and fished our own dinners. We rented a freezer cabin a couple of houses down the road. Almost everybody on the island had to rent a freezer. We had black-and-white TV, a big, old radio with lots of wave lengths, outdoor toilet and three wood stoves. We did have electricity, just so you know, lol. Moving into our brand new house in 1972 was like moving into luxury. Heated floors in the indoors bathrooms, a washroom just down the stairs (complete with clothesline and wooden pegs) and a big hot water boiler!

@Droopy - I remember the horses getting shoes too now that you mention it and wearing the feedbags. We had milk delivered by horse and cart.

Sherry, we have lightning bugs here on the farm--sitting on the patio watching them flit over the back yard and the pasture--wonderful!
Poodle skirts--lovely concoctions of fashion with a felt poodle on a full skirt, and if you were really a fashionista, the poodle had a rhinestone collar and leash!

I've lived in houses that had the 'outhouse' out back and having to packing water to the house from the well. Never had a poodle skirt but made one for my grand-daughter for a Hot August Nights party the town put on. :) It wasn't bad as a lot of other people lived the same way. I sure enjoyed that first indoor toilet though! ;):like:

What gets me is when you do send an e-mail and they don't reply so you are not positive if they got your message...or they don't call you back when you left a message..

Yeah. That sucks. But I still have that problem with snail mail....you just never know what the post office is going to do with it. I once got a "return to sender" thank you note I'd sent to a friend, one year to the day that I mailed it. It just so happened my friend was at my house when it came in the mailbox, and we both had to laugh...there was nothing wrong with the address, full postage, not illegible, right size...no actual reason that it should have been returned...OR any understanding of why it took the post office 365 days to get it back to me...it was going across town, not across the world!!

Okay, this post reminded me of The Statler Brother's song, "Do You Remember These?" Take the time to listen to this song. It's sure to put a nostalgic smile on your face.

A&W had take away Root Beer! Take home a gallon jug, and return the jug for a refill. Wish I could find real Root Beer nowadays.

Sassafras use in commercially made Root Beer was banned by the FDA in 1960 because of the carcinogenicity of its constituent Safrole. Some commercial root beers use a safrole free sassafras extract. And if you make your own you can use Sassafras like in the old days.

Wasn't Root Beer called Sassafras to begin with?
