Yes, it is a Nelly Moser. It has self rooted and been moved around the yard to several places. It is with a Persian lilac that is smaller than the old fashion ones, but much more fragrant. The trellis has another clematis, jackmani. Looks like it will provide shade for my hubby's smoke shack this summer. Ginny I love that double clematis too. Just need to make a better trellis for it this summer. Barb, Netty, 2forus, thanks for the kind comments. Netty and CM, sorry to hear of your troubles with clematis. Sometimes it is just finding the right variety planted in the right place. When I lived in Idaho, zone 4-5 our landlord had the most gorgeous one I have ever seen that climbed up to the rafters of a big old farm house. It was planted up against the foundation and froze to the ground every winter, but literally sprung up the wall every summer with big purple blooms covering it.
Cayuga, I'm really not sure what I am doing wrong here ... I have had 5 different Clematis since I moved here, in various places around the property. 2 have completely disappeared, 1 just seems to have a failure to thrive, one is an Autumn Clematis that has planted itself on my cedar hedge and does OK, and the final one is one that does OK but only gets a few feet tall and very few blooms. I am not sure what to think ... I had gorgeous Clematis at the old house!
Ooooo... Clematis wilt. I think I may have it in my one and only front yard clematis. It is barely surviving. I've tried the cutting it to the ground, but probably need to research further. It is also a very dry area in the summer getting no rain or water so gets stressed and is more susceptible.
Hostas are looking good this year since its been so dry. Guess slugs like the rain and humidity we have not had. Potted varieties first: left to right: bountiful chartreuse wiggles, small pot bountiful, gray pot is praying hands and hi ho silver. Far right pot is a NoID Smallest hostas next: bitty gold and pandora's box that probably got nibbled on. Fragrant blue, fragrant bouquet next. And then a few more, big sum and substance, October red, blue mouse ears, first frost each got their own pots this year. I'll add more later since this is the best they have ever looked. One flower combo planted years ago from cutting/starts, a blaze rose and one of many self propagated nelly mosers .
Amazing! I am just getting into the miniature Hosta's ... got Pandora's Box as a gift last year and I was hooked! Then again, I already had Hosta fever before that. Yours are looking great!
Jewell, I am glad your hostas are doing so well, slug-free. There is always a silver lining. Tell me, what do you do with the potted hostas in the winter? They don't get winter killed? I see it is zone 7b where you are. I am in 6a.....I am wondering if I could keep hostas in pots too. I like yours that much!
CM, pots have been my way of slug monitoring and protection for young plants. Most of my hostas have spent one or more winters in pots. The Jack Frost and blue mouse ears spent the winter in a relatively small pot, but this winter was mild with only a week to ten days of 15F weather at nights in the fall. I saw potted hostas on a blog from the Midwest where winters were colder than here, but don't know if they protected the pots or not during cold months. I don't do anything with mine and so far (only the last two winters) everything has been OK. We don't normally have very long cold snaps.
Love the hostas jewel and they sure are doing nicely without any slug damage. Good idea with the pots. Up in NJ I had hostas in pots and left them out all winterwith no extra protection and they were fine. We would get some very cold and nasty winters up there too. Last fall I put two different hostas in a wooden planter and they made it fine through the winter with no protection here too. I think If the pots are thick and well insulated they will do fine.
I'm going to try one next year in a pot but as cold as it gets here I'm going to winter it in the garage. Poor Mike is just going to have to give up a little bit more space for my plants.
Your garden is looking super again this year. So much colour...and your plant choice is so nice. BTW-- how is your man and you enjoying that little garden house?
Ginny good to know about potted hostas I have wondered. Good luck 2 for us with your potting endeavors. Sjoerd, he uses the shed often for relaxing with a cigar and whiskey, neither of which I enjoy, but I like seeing him relax. The shed should be covered in clematis this year since the two plants about have three sides protected from sun after just one year. I have a couple of cactus in there, but it's pretty much a smoke shack to keep the smell contained. Lots of hummingbirds have been seen flying about it for extra entertainment. A few more photos of today: ground orchids, double clematis, and blaze roses are all at their peak.
