KK--I am sorry that you have had this issue, and glad you finally found the right medication. It must have been tough not driving for 1 1/2 years.

There is a big difference in the writings of people who are communicating in a language that is not their native tongue or who have difficulties because of illness/injury and those who just don't care to make sure they are spelling words correctly or are using them properly. And you can tell the difference when reading their posts. Correcting the first two groups would be insulting to them and rude.

One of the problems is the education system. If you have never been taught to spell then you don't know you are not spelling words correctly. And parents who just don't care.

And there are those who use the texting way of spelling or chatspeak in all their communications. Those are the ones who need to be reminded that their native language (whichever one that may be) has many wonderful words to describe everything in life and those words are just waiting to be used fully, with all their letters included and in the correct order and in their proper context.

Spelling is as bad as it is because our educational system is deeply flawed. Our educational system is as bad as it is because despots like their peasants to be ignorant and unarmed.

dr says the shirt came from a Family Dollar Store. I think it was one in Arizona. You could try looking at one in your area. Sometimes one store has them and another won't.

I think it's really going to hurt kids and society later on to be so lax in education. I was recently trying to explain to someone who wanted the schools to cut music and art instead of penalizing the football team!
(I didn't tell her that they get a disproportionate amount of funding)

I tried to explain that music and art teach skills we really need like problem solving, creative thinking, discipline and goal orientation. She dismissed me and said they need the three R's and football...

I said she made a very good argument... (for the opposite)

It will be interesting to see how the next generations handle our mishandling

Could you or somebody please enlighten me about the three R's? I've never heard about them before.

    Reading ,'riting and 'rithmetic

(Reading, writing and arithmetic). I believe it comes from an old song titled "School Days" written in 1907.
    its chorus:

    School days, school days
    Dear old Golden Rule days
    'Reading and 'riting and 'rithmetic
Taught to the tune of the hick'ry stick
You were my queen in calico
I was your bashful, barefoot beau
And you wrote on my slate, "I Love You So"
When we were a couple o' kids

And as you can tell, even calling them the three R's is not helping kids learn to spell

But there are other parts of education that they have stood for in years long ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_three_Rs

I agree Droopy! Waste hierarchy is much better.

I thought it was funny and ironic that she used "3 R's" to justify reducing school budget!

I heartily agree with all of you about how kids are not able to spell correctly or even care if they do.
But this morning I heard some shocking news, and it concerns adults.
Because of all the cell phone texting, and sending emails, ect. People are loosing the ability to write. Now that is really scary. It said that when they do try and write even their name it is very hard to read.
Hummm-I know that it not my honey's problem as he never uses the computer or our one cell phone. But his writing it awful. I think lazy comes to mind.
Something else kids now a days can not do well is to figure out in their heads how much change you have coming back from a sale they have rung up. They depend on the machine to give them the correct amount. Boy if all the electronics ever failed we might be reduced to communicating in grunt's and drawing pictures in the sand. Now that would be one form of communication I would excel in. I love to draw. ;)

I agree with everyone's sentiments. Terrible spelling has got so out of hand that it's almost fashionable to do so. Whenever I see bad spelling in a professional writing context it takes me right out of the moment and I can't help but question how professional the author is.

I will admit I do have some problems with comma placement and sentence structure sometimes so I'm no angel either.

When some day I do have kids I wonder how I will help them to value good reading/writing skills? Probably will dig up my childhood books and read with them. I think it does give a child an upper hand over others to write well, increasingly so heading the way we are.

I recently helped a good friend to write a book, my help involved spelling, grammar/sentence structure, and punctuation.. My admonition to him at the beginning of the project was,
"Errors in spelling, etc. did two things to a piece of literature, both bad!
one-- they break the reader's concentration,
and two-- they call the author's veracity into question!"
In so far as GardenStew is concerned, the veracity part of that admonition never (or very rarely) ever raises its ugly head..
Why??? Well, we are a large group of friends carrying on a general (sometimes specific) conversation and don't tend to editorially critique one another's words and misspelling is rather common when dealing with scientific names of flora and fauna...
So that's my story and I'm stickin' to it,,,Hank

I agree with the opinions already stated here. I occasionally let a misspelled word get by but I make an effort to check every post I make in forums. Its also a pet peeve of mine to see the horrible grammar, bad spelling or misuse of words.

I think the biggest cause is that everyone almost has Internet access. There has always been and will always be a large portion of people who don't care enough to learn or simply don't have the brain power to learn how to spell and properly phrase what they type. It's more obvious now that this new way of communicating is out there for everyone to read. I'm struggling to make sure my kid learns that spelling and grammar is important, it doesn't matter that most of his friends type like idiots.

I published a story on line a few years back and was admonished for my 'spelling errors.' When I checked I could not find any, so I asked for the person to list them.....armour...favourite.....colour and so on. He had been using an American spell checker. I pointed out that as my target audience was in the UK my spelling of these words was correct.
Now if there is something that really annoys me it is 'would of' instead of 'would have'.
If anyone has ever read The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, they might recall the words of the Humbug.
"A slavish concern for the composition of words is the sign of a bankrupt intellect."
    Ah well!
