What I did today in the garden:
I replaced a few Asparagus crowns. The few which aren't showing above ground seemed to have a tinge of green at the crown. 11 plants are about a foot tall. Therefore it seems the others should at least be above ground.

Planted four rows of corn since the pollination does better with a block of four rows, caged the pepper plants in back of the barn so they wouldn't flop over in our winds, and dibbled (thank you Eileen for that wonderful descriptive word!) for red potatoes, and came up with a half-dozen. Tonight we are eating from the garden--new potatoes with butter and parsley, edible pod peas, a nice lettuce salad, and chicken Cordon Bleu--not our hens:smt117, but the ones from the grocery!

I have gotten so many of the garden projects done this year, projects that have been sitting on my to-do list for a long time. Yesterday I got the 'gray water' bed cleaned up, mulched and assorted planters and objets d'art (junque in other words)placed out there. Still need to get the rain barrel replaced then put up the little white picket fencing I have.

Typically I wander the gardens going from one project to another as something occurs to me and never feeling like I got anything done, this year I have purposely stayed with one part of the garden until it's done.....except for the front sun bed where I am slowly digging up soil to create a ditch for the pots of Cannas. But I can forgive myself for the length of time it is taking since I have a large old rubbermaid trash can that I fill up, have to get hubby to use the two wheeler to get it out back to the hugelkultur and then the next day I shovel it all into that bed and start filling it again. So far there have been three trips like that and I don't seem to have even touched the surface of the bed of heavy black clay out there.

finished tilling and laid 10 rows of plastic about 120' long each. laid some in the high tunnel, too. planted greenbeans, wax beans and purple beans. it is now 4 o'clockish and the men have helped me all day and they got an emergency call to fix a huge water leak. now they will need to work all evening too. at least it isn't cold and is still light at 8 o'clock.

Here it's mostly getting seeds into Peat pots. Also transferred tiny lettuce plants into larger, little pots. Potatoes are putting out tiny leaves as if afraid of catching cold.
The only thing in the earth is onions, Asparagus crowns and the potatoes. The garlic was set out last Fall.

Found the perfect birthday present for a friend--three pots of peppers and a cherry tomato plant! She had been looking for these but it's a bit late here for the usual stores to carry them, so I called a nursery and found them. I put them all in a garden basket with a bow on the handle.
I side dressed our tomatoes and peppers with compost, and weeded the potatoes again. What is it with potatoes that they attract every weed in the county? Dibbled again and came up with Yukon Gold and Red LaSodas. We may be harvesting in a couple of weeks.

Got entirely too much sun! That is for sure. But all beds besides the cucamelon bed and the pineberry bed are done. Everything is planted, watered, and got sprinklers set up. Next is getting straw to put over the beds to help keep the weeds down and perfecting the watering. Speaking of cucamelons, anyone have any good cocktail recipes or other recipes for them? Im very excited to try them this year.

KB, I grew Cucamelons one year. I just stood by the very productive plant and popped them into my mouth. Mine had a lemony taste.
I did nothing in the garden today/

Planted more beets (Chioggia), Swiss Chard and parsnips yesterday. We planted several bean types at home as well as the three tom sorts. Additionally we planted a few Cayenne peppers.

I haven't done much of anything the last few days, too many family things going on. But this week I really need to get back out front and continue digging that trench. Our weather is on a yo-yo cycle lately, some days it gets hot early and some days it stays very comfy in the 60-70 deg range so my being outside is a yo-yo cycle too.

We harvested about a third of our onions this morning and my husband is eyeing the potato patch and saying "Think we'll be digging potatoes soon?" After hanging the onions to dry, I planted the last row of cucumbers and a small patch of squash. The local food pantry can absorb all the cukes and squash we can grow.
