What have you done today in the Garden?

Beautiful harvests SJ & Deepwoods!

MG & Carolyn, sometimes other people's lack of knowlefge/awareness takes my breath away.

Yesterday, I harvested spinach, arugula and lettuce for a big ole salad for the "Laughing Ladies book club". The meeting was at my house and because the book was set in the south (Lisa Wingate's Before We Were Yours) I served shrimp, mushrooms & grits with the salad. It was delicious!

I also harvested another 12 heads of lettuce for the "Laughing ladies" to take home with them.

 

I think we should pass a law that requires every household to grow a garden... or at least a plant to harvest stage. just like the aca... mandate it! sheesh! how can people be so clueless when it comes to where food comes from how long it takes to grow it and how it is harvested. grow something... anything....to harvest stage and actually harvest it, too.

I see one zucchini almost ready to harvest in the high tunnel. we picked about 25 pounds of peas this morning and lettuce needs picked again.

last night we planted cabbage and broccoli again.
started throwing away bedding plants. they look beautiful but I am not selling any of them to speak of. I am wasting time water and fertilizer on them at this point.

 

Stopped by the garden on my way to work to water the seedlings. Here are a few photos. Please excuse the mess. The above are green bean seedlings.

well done Cayuga Morn... it looks great.

it has been just about temperature perfect...for growing and we have had overcast and rain for the past several days.... it has been beautiful... everything is growing like mad. even the tomatoes I don't have planted and am trying to toss... are growing roots out the stems.... they look fantastic. I wish I could plant them instead of tossing them. it is so wasteful...I just see so much potential waste. so many hungry people out there and no one to plant it and eat it...

I tossed around a 1/2 pound of cut flower seeds mix... scattered it here and there and everywhere... maybe I will have so many cut flowers I will be able to retire.

planted up a few plant pans... or pot toppers. I went and bought new case of "pie pans" to use up all my odds and ends plants and have those to sell for a the Summer at my farmers markets....maybe.

planted up some celosia in the high tunnel and weeded some in there.

I had a miserable headache yesterday and while I was laying down a customer came and wanted a warranty on her tomato plants. they weren't' blooming yet. as if that has anything to do with me?

 

Carolyn, I hope your headache, and customer, went away! Are there any community gardens near you? Or perhaps a housing authority that oversees low-income housing? I ask because that might be an outlet for your extra plants. A friend and I did a brief "how-to" on gardening, and the residents received a 5 gal. bucket if they didn't have a container, and planted a tomato or a pepper in it. It was very successful--we got weekly updates on the plants' progress. Our local community garden is always begging for plants, even flowers.

aww, thanks pals! it finally broke at about 2:00 today. got lots done even with the headache. picked peas again.. about 25 pounds, planted up more pot topper containers, sold a few more hanging baskets, went and salvaged a bunch of the tomatoes and peppers I tossed yesterday for a friend who hadn't gotten her garden in yet, and another friend came and helped me condense and organize what was left of the herbs.

now I feel like i am getting a cold. like I really need or want a cold!

No Jane... no community garden. We tried one a few years ago... those are a very negative experience for me... not the people who want to garden but don't have the space but those who want the food but don't want to do any work... no, I will just throw away what I can't sell or give away right here.....

 

A young woman posted on our town's website asking for help identifying plants. She is new to our town. I helped her out with that, then told her I could give her some divisions from my garden. So today was the day for that. She arrived with pots and work gloves and plant ID tags. Very organized! We dug together for over an hour and she left with a good 15 plants in her car. I am in my 60's but "well preserved" (IMO!). She was maybe 30. She was so sweet, quick to carry the heavy potted plants, quick to offer to dig.
I would gladly help her out again.

 

Cayuga, you are a sweetie! There is a long tradition of "passalong plants." I think you are very traditional! Each time that young lady enjoys one of your/her plants, she will think fondly of you.

 

Over the last month we had our house move and we are still decorating. I did what I could in the garden. We had a month of torrential rains so no time wasting watering. Now weeding and mulching. I mulch with either the weeds that I pull up or with the weeds and grass that grows around the garden. I let it dry for a couple of days and then rake it up and mulch. We have started harvesting new potatoes. I harvested my first cucumber and courgette yesterday. We have also got peas and carrots and lettuces.

 

It's not what I did today, it's what Im doing tomorrow. The weather is heating up and things are speeding up in the veggie patch. Tomorrow I'll be reseeding the green beans and installing drip irrigation. Should be fun. I'll keep you posted on my progress.
