What have you done today in the Garden?

this weekend I:
added compost to my one and only veg bed.
planted some of the cold weather loving veg, lettuce peas and broccoli
finished the demolition work to remove the raised deck that was used for the no longer existing above ground pool ( next step will be to rebuild it as a greenhouse )
continued digging out the grass for the new garden bed
cleaned up the yard a bit.

still lots of work to do, but i look forward to it, and my daughter is really into it as well and she was out there helping me, tomorrow my two boys are coming ( no school ) and so I will put them all to work!

So glad winter is finally over! and spring is finally here!

 

I did not want to run equipment and disturb everybody Easter Sunday so I snuck out with my pruners and started taking a nip here and a bough there to improve dappled shade in the front lawn. That led to running a polesaw today. I swear that 1 hour with a pole saw makes 8 hours of chipping and shredding. I have plenty of fresh chipped and shredded mulch piles though!

 

work. work and more work. watering hanging baskets and bedding flats of peppers and flowers, transplanting bedding plants and planted tomatoes last night inside the high tunnel. It only took until this week to get the tunnel ready. sheesh! hopefully this Fall I don't have a repeat unexpected life getting in the way disaster on my hands and I can get my fall work done in the Fall.

 

I did some weeding but as I have done some in March there was’nt much weeding in the borders to do.

I checked my community garden plot. We have had rain rain rain! The overall garden was soaked. Huge puddles everywhere. My plot was looking good though. I keep adding organic material etc so my beds are higher than the surrounding soil.

Peas have sprouted, so has the lettuce and the radishes, onions & the garlic. Still nothing from the asparagus. Maybe soon. Started more seeds in the basement.

I hope to get my cold frame set up tomorrow.

 

I went around with a little bit of superthrive and sprinkled everything. The okra seed has all popped up and the yellow squash are beginning to break ground.

I had dropped a lot of spring ramial wood so I finished chipping it up to use as mulch after we spread the leaf mould from last years fall.

Didn't have to water the garden today had a bit of rain.
Been moving plants out into the greenhouse to be hardened off before planting out at the end of may.

 

Just found out that my BiL fixed my tiller!! He's bringing it back this weekend so I can put some seedlings in the ground. I have just the spot, near my deck. Full sun 6-8 hours and easy access to water.

Score!!

 

Wow spread many wheel barrows of ramial chips in needy places across the yard, cut the firewood I could not chip, raked it in and cut the grass for good measure Ready for the 2 days of rain we have been promised!

 

Wow!! And my gardener burning the edge of my lawn was bad enough , he used as trimmer too. Take care!

@Dirtmechanic what are ramial chips? A particular kind of wood chip?

 

Yes. Ramial wood is the tender green skinny branches, and when they have green leaves, the nutrient level is even higher. The ratio of pulpwood to green bark is very favorable. Ever seen a tree fallen in the forest where the first thing eaten is the bark? Its natural hors d'oeuvres.

I have taken on the responsibilities of being the membership coordinator for our community garden. Basically I just have to find new members, give them the paperwork, assign them a plot, answer questions, etc.

I am pleased to say we now have 6 new members! We still have a couple of open plots left. If they dont get taken, I may throw a cover crop on them & hope for more members next season.

We also have a new teeasurer and she is on the ball. Lots of new energy in the garden .
