Willow, I risk being dumb as a rock, but what size is Smurf size? I too picked beans again this morning.
Sjoerd, I will take your advice and allow the red onions to remain in the earth for now. Speaking of onions, I'm going to try posting a 1st ever photo of onions grown from the root end of an adult onion.

Sjoerd, I'm trying to recall how to post the photo. It's in my photo album. If you go there, you can see it.
AHA, I got it. Photo below.
The plan is to grow onions from every root end and never waste.

I did nothing in my garden, but I went to a neighbor's house and picked black raspberries. There's supposed to be thunderstorms this afternoon.

Willow, I wish we would get rain even if accompanied by thunder.
    The berries sound good.

Like Willow, I did nothing in the gardens today because of intermittent storms. We are grateful for the rain, but wish that here in Texas it would just rain, and not storm!

Growingpains--Those are challots, right? They are looking pretty good. Challots ought to be pretty close to harvest now. I am not sure about where you live though.

Sjoerd, what you call challots, we call shallots, I believe. Never having grown shallots, I'm not sure. I only know we took a large onion and cut the root end off, put it in a shallow dish of water, When the roots began growing again, we placed it in the soil, and that was the result. Now I must research shallots.

GP. shallots are not onions per se. They are milder than onions, and sweeter. They are also smaller and more "pointed" than the globe shaped onions. In flavor they are closer to red onions than the yellow or white onions.
I have purchased shallots at a grocery, planted them, and had a nice harvest. Haven't done it lately, so I thank you for reminding me of them, and I'll plant some this fall!

Marlin, thanks for the info. Now I'm wondering how we got shallots when what we planted was the root end of a large, yellow onion?

Mart, they also say "wishin don't fix the transmission" , but your old saying is what I remember from my childhood. ;)

You are doing great work, GP. I have never done that to onions. It is interesting to me.

Sjoerd, it's easy and what we usually toss in the compost is now giving us more food. I also root the branches I cut from tomato plants for extra plants. You can get information on these things from YouTube.
