What have you done today in the Garden?

Sjoerd, what do you do with the old decomposed (decomposing?) wood chips from your paths? I love the look of your paths. For the first time ever, I have reserved a plot in the local community garden. I don't have enough at the house to grow vegies, so I will try it at the Garden. I hope to reduce the need to weed by doing something like you have with the paths.

 

Yesterday, I had our Globe Willow cut down, it was eating our house, and we cleaned out the front gardens for Spring. I'm hoping to see some bulbs popping up pretty soon!

 

Wow, this is so bizarre for me to be hearing about spring elsewhere. In the northeast US, we have had an unusual amount of snow. We have a white rail fence with a gate that is just under 4 feet tall. You can't see it for all the snow. It is like it is not there. We walk right over it (with snow shoes). It is tricky driving around because the snow banks are so high, it is hard to make turns, there is no clear line of sight.

 

I played in the greenhouse all afternoon. Got my tomato plants transplanted. It has been in the 20's all day and was 85 in the gh. It felt so good.

 

Hey there Cayuga--I put the composted wood chips from the garden path under various bushes, trees and Clematises.
Congrats for getting a plot at the community gardens. That is great news! I hope that when you try something like I do with the garden paths that it works for you.
As you saw on the pics, I use root cloth under the chips. This way, the chips will not compost so quickly. I use this technique with some of my chip paths but not all. By using the two different techniques, I do not have to refresh the paths all at once...which is a bit of work. I can tell you that I never get weeds growing in my paths, so I'm a happy camper.

 

I cleaned the border along the main path in front of my lottie. It was all hands and knee work. I removed an enormous amount of Clematis growth. If I didn't cut back too far, they ought to be rejuvenated. That second Clematis trim finished that task.
The remaining leeks and Swiss chard were removed and the soil loosened. The entire veggie section is now ready, and with the broadies germinating on the windowsill, I expect to have them in the ground out at the lottie in a few weeks. I'm excited.

 

It's still quite snowy here in Ohio. However, we're too impatient to wait all the way until Spring to get our seeds started, so we're starting several now indoors! Right now, we've got some parsley and onions sown, and we'll have tomatoes and peppers sown in a weeks time!

 

I up-potted some basil seedlings, planted Mexican Buckeyes, and made sure all my seedlings were damp, warm, and happy. If the weather doesn't improve soon, I'm going to spread dirt on the guest bedroom floor and start planting!

 

More cleaning up of ground debris. I pruned the Lonicera and roses waaaaaaay back. began removing the soil out of the greenhouse--I'm about a third done.The broadies have been up 4 days now.

More digging out of the greenhouse. I am 2/3rds done in there.
Fed and watched the birds. Have begun hardening-off the broadies at home.

 

Today is march 8 and the day we planted our garden and played in the yard all day. Snacked on the last of our oranges and enjoyed the spring like day. I will post a blog post full of pictures later but am just in from a wonderful day in the yard.

 

Yesterday and today I cleaned debris out of my backyard flower beds, and raked the grass. It is in the 60s and I wanted to be outdoors! Everything is pretty dormant, and it is pretty early, but getting the leaves and stuff out of the beds is OK to do now. I cut back the Sweet Autumn Clems, and trimmed some old canes from the Dogwoods. A huge branch came down off my neighbor's silver maple in our yard, so we cut it up and got it ready for the trash pick up. Watered some of my young shrubs, and scrubbed the bird baths.
Just a taste of spring here for us YEA!
