What have you done today in the Garden?

I watered some and weeded lots. I turned compost and harvested just over a kilo of strawberries today.

 

Thinned the perennial beds. A lot of work! I have too many plants!

A young friend came over this am from the Community Garden. She& her husband have recently bought a home in town & their plot is empty. Yes. A bare slate. We spent over an hour going through my various beds, she making notes about what she'd like divisions of. The best part of this for me is giving plants away & making another couple happy. The second best part is that they will do the digging!!!

 

Cayuga, I beg to differ. You have just the right amount of plants.
You share photos of your lovely flowers with all of us on the Stew; you give plants (and most likely advice) to budding gardeners; and you have the pleasure of sharing without digging!

 

It's been raining on and off today so no gardening but it did need it, maybe tomorrow.

Dug the grass out of the rockery. There's wasn't much, but it irritates me when I'm looking out of the French windows and I can see a few fronds "waving at me."

I did a fair bit of pruning of the wisteria on the garage pergola. There was a bit of "bunching" above it at the far end. I want the many branches to continue flowing to the left, to "cascade." So, "uncooperative untrainable branches" those that grow upwards have to go.
It's been reasonably successful this year. It's just disappointing that the blue varieties, at either end of the white, had their blooms damaged by frost. I'm hoping for a better show from them next year.




But I'm happy with the canopy, which will fill out during the summer, as it will be putting on a lot of growth in the next few months.





I gave this acer palmatum's "fringe" a bit of a trim. The shade doesn't do the grass any good. You can't trim it too much as it would lose its "dome shape" and end up looking like a cocktail umbrella.




I had to sharpen my garden shears. Easy enough to put the blades in my vice and attack them with a file.
That's all I'm doing today, my golf clubs needed cleaning and now I'm watching the tennis.

Today was easy due to rain. I fertilized some camilla and other ornamentals and put out some hardwood mulch. I planted another bush for pollinators DW calls a "Joe Pye" weed. She has had me plant some butterfly bushes and so forth. Crack for bees to be sure, and the butterflies are showing up. I really have a hard time realizing just how good of a sense of smell insects must have. They are like little bloodhounds or something.

 

Sowed more corn, watered the beans & peas, weeded. Picked some peas & lettuce.

I put triclopyr on a fig and japanese persimmon stump. I will get some more JP, they are tasty and ripe in November while I am out mulching leaves.

 

Did some more weeding and tidying the border that goes all along the path.do the rest tomorrow.
Watered a blueberry bush and the hanging baskets.

 

With the overcast, darkening skies, I nipped out and picked squash early this morning. Good thing I did, since we have had a downpour, thunder, lightening, and winds from about 11 a.m. until now. We are hoping the storm passes, but if it does or not, we won't be in the gardens for a couple of days.

I cleared all the fallen wisteria blossoms off the path and patio. Then gave the patio a good scrub with soapy water with my deck scrubber.Lots of pigeon poo to remove.
I've taken away my ground feeder. I noticed on the trail camera recordings no less than six wood pigeons around it at around 5.00am. this morning.
The blackbirds, starlings, sparrows and blue-tits still have the little pigeon-proof feeder house on the pergola post, the smallest ones two peanut butter feeders and the smallest birds have the bird feeder on a post under the azaleas in the side bed. I had to fill it yesterday as they'd nearly emptied it.

Our "rose patio" is starting to deserve its name. Even that needed a bit of scrub at the near end.




This is a relatively new clematis, the flowers are about the size of dinner plates. I leave it to its own devices, as the depth of the azaleas makes it inaccessible.





That's it for today, a lot of tennis on the box to watch this afternoon.

 

Went to the dentist to see the higenist so all that I've done is pot on 6 Chilli plants that arrived yesterday.

 

I weeded the tomatoes and cucumbers. Lordy, those are growing like mad! I also picked sugar peas and three more squash. We'll have the sugar peas tonight for dinner, and tomorrow I'll take the squash to the food pantry.
