We have a rat run through the side of the garden, there used to be a neighbour who had a big aviary which attracted vermin, and left us with the rat highway legacy - which of course needs to be dealt with quickly....so today I did a bit of gentle pruning to leave the rats less cover whilst we dispose of them.... the gentle pruning heap finished up about the same size as the house, and the bank along the side of the garden is now looking a bit bare.

I've been building new raised beds for next year. I needs to make my garden more accessible if Im going to keep doing it. Raised beds help me a lot - easier planting, tending, weeding, everything. My older beds are 18 inches high, and the new ones are 24 inches. I think it will be great once they are done, but it's hard work now. The second one is half full of soil. As the song goes, "inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow".

I also emptied a truckload of tree leaves onto the patch where I grew sweetcorn this year and plan squash next year. Those leaves will prevent weed growth until I use the the ground, and then the un-degraded ones can be used for mulch or composted.

Tetters, you need a lady cat (the females hunt, the males just lounge around). We have two cats, one of each gender, and I think the tom couldn't catch cold if he tried, but the female is a great hunter.

Hubby has been collecting leaves from up road on the path for our garden, don't get any from the trees around here. Just going to put them straight on the ground around the fruit plants.

Here is my squash bed from this year, which will be sweet corn next year. I covered it with about a foot deep layer of wet leaves for the winter.

Today I finished the sides and first layer of new topsoil for the second big raised bed.

    Before today's work.

After finishing the side and the base layer of topsoil.

It will get a layer of leaves, then compost, then fill the rest of the way with some nice soil from a raised bed I'm emptying out that grew garlic, then green beans this year. Then a layer of leaves. In late winter I'll plant bush peas to further condition the soil before the tomatoes are planted in May or June.

Thanks Logan. This is part of my goal for a more accessible garden for a person with physical limitations. The height is much easier go work, and I can sit on the edges. Fall is the best time to do it.

Ha ha, it just so happens that I was telling Zigs this evening about a lady cat I had here for about 18 years - she was small, black and white, and called Mitzy. She came through my bedroom window one night carrying an enormous rat almost as big as she was. She plainly thought it would be good to play with just like the little mice she brought home from time to time (like a dozen times a day usually) It took a great deal of effort to destroy that rat before I could get back to sleep again. All the furniture upturned, I finally cornered it under a cupboard and walloped it with my son's cricket bat.....phew!

Another day clearing leaves. I've filled the green bin now. Still another bin-full to come down from the wisterias on the pergolas, but they are "still hanging on" despite the high winds last night. So maybe in the latter part of the week.
I should have the length of pelmet arrive on Monday for the new kitchen cupboard, plus the tuner/amp I bought on eBay. So enough to keep me busy.
