We have gray squirrels here, but they are not half the trouble as the armadillos. Back in the mid 1980s, armadillos migrated up to Missouri fromTexas. We thought they might leave when winter came around. They did not even leave when it was -20F with a windchill of -70F. ... They do eat lots of grubs (and for some reason grubs are popping out of the ground a lot lately?) , but they do not replace their divots and leave a lot of mess all over my yard. At least they hibernate over the winter. I do feed the grubs I find to my chickens. No, I am not eating those "Hoover hogs"... eeeewwww... Other internet friends call squirrels "tree rats"....

I had a lovely surprise this afternoon. When I went out to take care of Horsey, and my chickens and check the mailbox, there were several blooms on one of my lilac bushes. Mine are the old fashioned lilacs that only bloom in the spring. They got froze off and did not bloom last spring. My lilac bushes look awful right now, and the mail carrier says all the lilac bushes around here look awful at present. A lot of limbs are bare naked, but a few are putting out some new leaves. I will share the pictures, but they are not as gorgeous as some of your gardens.

 

This is the wrong time of year to prune my lilacs, but I will do that over the winter. My Ortho pruning book says to prune them in February... I won't get into those weeds until cold weather because of SNAKES. I have pulled a lot of weeds and taken out some dead wood recently, but the rest will wait until after frost. I couldn't post them in my post above, the website would not let me even do it from the editing button. (that might be the wacky internet here)

@Willowisp0801 those raspberries are yummy, they don't grow well in my garden but i get a few.

 

We lived in NE Texas for several years and had wild hogs. I worked for the post office so I saw all the yards in our little town. Those hogs would just tear it up. Your yard can be great when you go to bed and devastated when you wake up. We had dogs and I always had to look outside before going out with them to make sure no hogs were around.

Well shoot, I was going to drain the pool today, but I just heard thunder. Maybe it'll just be a quick storm. Just looked at the weather, rain all day. I guess I'll get the sump pump ready and if there's a lull go put it in. The rain was supposed to be yesterday. Just looked at the weather, I guess I can wait until Wednesday or even better Thursday, I have the morning off.

 

@Willowisp0801 We have feral hogs here, and domestic pigs that people turned loose which is illegal. They do a lot of damages too. We also have razorback hogs which have tusks and are mean tempered. I believe they run in large groups or herds? My youngest has admitted to being treed by razorback hogs a few times. My boys used to take off out into the woods without asking. I would be talking to them, and next thing they had sneaked out the door and I had no idea where they had gone.

"Hoover hogs" is a nickname for armadillos, from the Great Depression era. President Hoover promised chickens in every pot, but that never happened. Some people eat armadillos, and I guess they were hungry enough to eat them.

Apparently, other wild animals are also considered "Hoover hogs"....

Sometimes local papers publish recipes for eating Hoover hogs... I never saved any because I am vegetarian, and would not eat unclean animals anyway.

It is soggy outside, I guess it rained overnight. I slept through whatever it did in the night.

Guess I will work on that quilt for awhile. Maybe it will dry out later.

Yes, I think that's what we had. I think a group is called a sounder? I looked it up a long time ago, when I found out a flock of crows was called a murder (they had a list of what different groups were called). I always thought it was odd because I lived on the Puget Sound. Then to make matters worse they named the Soccer team the Seattle Sounders! Of course the San Juan Islands are also known as the pig war islands.....I miss Washington State.

It's raining today so I will also be working on a quilt.

How do ya trap a hog? I guess they are tasty too.

 

I guess the guy that shot the pig (that started the war) thought it was tasty. I'm not a big pork fan. I tend to stay away from pork and beef; but especially pork.

 

@Pacnorwest Missouri Department of Conservation does not want individuals shooting/trapping the domestic pigs turned wild. They want to catch large groups to eliminate them. They are very destructive. It also encourages more people to illegally release domestic pigs.

I have not heard that people cannot hunt other feral hogs like the razorbacks, so I do not know. Or maybe none of them can be hunted?

 

I have not gotten at that quilt yet. I was sleepy and went to take a short nap that turned into 3 hours or so. Then I took care of some housework and planted those rose bushes in the bucket. I hope they recover okay. I got overheated and came in. Now it is storming and raining, maybe through tomorrow? But I did get those rose bushes in the ground, and a load of bark chips hauled.

 

Today I moved more plants from the patio to the vegetable garden area. Sad looking plants, season over.

I tried to give the big variety dahlia tubers to a neighbor but she didn't want them. There are a couple of other neighbors to try LOL.

It's dry. Watered some things, mostly new or in containers.

I think I'll set up a couple more lavender air layers, including one of those very old plants that I cut way back. I had missed one stem, which looks healthy and might work for an air layer. To make a beginning, I drilled 1" holes near the bottom of a small flower pot, for inserting the stem through the bottom. More to do tomorrow.

I saved seeds from the " Vanilla Alumia" marigolds. I keep wanting to call them "Vanilla Aluminum" LOL. Also from a Four O'Clock that is a different shade of red from usual. It was a volunteer that appeared in the expansion joint of the patio. It must have grown from seeds cast off by a plant from previous years. I don't recall that particular color before. Now I have seeds for magenta, yellow, white and this red one, for next year. No pink - I "think" the pink is a hybrid of the white and the red, so who knows, maybe there will be some from the saved seeds.

 

How do you dry your oregano?

I might have some to dry. I cut them down a month ago. The made a lot of new, tender looking fresh growth after that. Seems odd for me to buy it for kitchen use when I have so much growing.
