What have you done today in the Garden?

Well, there was a thing or two to do in the lottie today. To begin with, we harvested 23 parsnips, planted some plants, looked at the sprouts, but did not pick any. Got the old wood arranged so that on the day of chipping, all we have to do is load it up and take it up to the chipper. I checked in on the bees.--They are still flying and are in a wintry mood.
It was enough to make the muscles stiff.

 

That actually is a very beautiful picture. What do you use for the shade in the greenhouse? It looks like cheese cloth.

 

Weeded the vegetable garden and picked four bell peppers to slice and freeze. Checked on the new roses and surveyed the zinnias to see if there are enough orange ones to make a nice Halloween bouquet for the local nursing home. The activities director does a great job--decorating for holidays, arranging interesting and fun games and events--but her budget is very limited, so any decoration is appreciated.

Thanks for liking the pic. The white stuff that looks like cheesecloth is actually a white, chalky suspension that I smear on the outside of the glass panes. The beauty of this stuff is that when it is not raining it is white (keeping out too much light), like you can see in the foto; however, when it rains the glass panes are totally clear, letting light in.

 

So it's what we call greenhouse whitewash...I have never used it..we couldn't keep reaching the upper glass on our greenhouse. It sits up on 5 layers of cement blocks....thanks for the info.....

 

Hahaha---I see what you mean. We use a rag on a hoe handle to reach the upper windows as it is. It must be a real challenge for you with that grand greenhouse that you have.

 

It is almost evening here now and I feel good and tired.
More parsnips!!! They are coming out of my ears.
Processed seventeen of them today and got 13 freezer bags of 400 g each.
The freezer is now completely full, trouble is that I still have oodles in the lottie...not to mention the sprouts which I have not yet harvested any of.
I am a little troubled at what I am going to do with all the veg. When the sprouts are ready, I guess that I will just eat them fresh every time. There is also the Food Bank, neighbours and family.

Toni, don't overdo! That is a very ambitious plan, and I'm sure you'll get it done, but take your time in doing it.
We had more rain during the night, so I can't do much in any of the gardens today without sinking to my boot tops in mud. I have some herbs in pots, so I harvested basil and oregano and parsley, and made some herb breads to stash in the freezer for the winter days when I don't have fresh herbs for baking.

 

Garden is put to bed for the winter. I finally cut down all the asparagus fronds & carted them off site in my car. The only remaining task I have is spreading mulch over the beds.

I have a picture of the Veg garden bed but can't seem to load it.

Interestingly, while I was cutting back the asparagus fronds, I discovered 5 new spears!. This is the first year with this asparagus bed, so I did not harvest any....But I did snap off a spear & munched it right there in the garden!
I just tried to load a photo of the crown & spear but apparently all my photos are too large.

It sounds like things are going according to schedule there. Wasn't that fun-- sneaking a lil bite of asparagus there in the garden. I was disappointed to hear that you are having probs uploading piccies, 'cause I am very interested. Can you not reduce your foto size before uploading them?

Have you started with seed catalogues yet?

Thanks. No I haven't started with the seed catalogs yet. I tend to dive into them once the snow flies on this side of the Atlantic. Such welcome balm then. I did order & plant some species tulips this year for the first time. They are not supposed to be attractive to deer (my nemesis) so I am hopeful.

What a wonderful play in the yard day after a shower I sit with a cold beer waiting on the foot ball game.
We finally got the blue berries moved to their new box. did some other chores while BBQing and enjoying the fire pit. When we get all the pictures posted and the story wrote we will let yall know but now its Louisiana Saturday night !!
