PAC- Yes, that is what I’m going for. I have several Viburnums in that area so when they shed their leaves I’ll still have something nice to see. I already have a Blue Totem Spruce and a good size Green Mountain Boxwood , so the Serbian will be a good addition!
It'll be hot today. I got up early to water stuff. I might plant the ground cover Manzanita plants tomorrow or Monday. They are small plants and probably not root-bound, so I think they will survive future hot days after they settle in. The rockrose made it through yesterday's high 90s just fine despite getting root pruning for being root bound. This weather solidifies my resolve to convert, as much as I can, to xeric species. I'm not up to going out in the heat to water. It wears me down. Also, some old standards have turned crispy (nasturtium) or wilt frequently (tall cosmos, big dahlias) despite frequent watering. On the other hand, I'm paying attention to plants that stand up like champions in this weather, either without watering, or not much watering (Mediterranean herbs like oregano, lavender, rosemary, sages; four o'clocks (there is also a desert Mirabilis that I haven't tried), dwarf dahlias, most of the established fruit trees). Roses hold up well but I give some water. In containers, with watering, Mandevilla holds up beautifully, and succulents of course (mostly sedums and sempervivum). This summer's temps and rain. Daniel and I are both living in the PNW constantly trying to cope with the weather changes. Temps never got higher than high 80’s in summers , just looking at the graphs in Daniel’s post, how temps have escalated in both highs and lows. I am so confused as to what growing zone to claim. Now we are coping with three digits for summer high’s and threatening forest fires around us every summer. Even with the climate change our weather is similar in many ways . Daniel lives, just across the Columbia river from northern Oregon where I am located. I think Daniel has a good plan to marry in garden plants that require less watering. Hens and chicks is a great plant for dry or wet conditions in a garden with so much moisture in winters hot dry summers. Provide they are in a protected area in winters. My garden is a mature garden and in most cases doesn’t require as much water except where the dahlias and a few perennials located in the same area. Even with the height temps the biggest threat in my garden at the moment is the ground squirrels digging around tree roots threaten their demise as a daily task to eliminate them some way.
oooo- Oh no you did—-n’t …. Little varmints look so cute don’t they ? … Daniel very clever AI representation of planning a war against my garden. Well I got news for Chip and Dale I’m fighting back. I have weapons from space no squirrel will survive in my garden .
From Alien - "Vasquez: All right, we got seven canisters of CN-20. I say we roll them in there and nerve gas the whole ******* nest. Hicks: That's worth a try, but we don't know if it's gonna affect them. Hudson: Let's just bug out and call it even, man! What are we even talking about this for? Ripley: …I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." On the other hand, that might not be a "tree - friendly" approach...
