We grow enough for our self. And to share with friends who can not garden any longer. First tomato-fresh no better taste. Hog from farmer friend. Fussy what he feeds them. Getting freezer ready.
I think Jewell's thought on self-suffeciency is a perfect reason for me, as well. There are several reasons that I'm putting my hand to plow for the first time this coming Spring. One would be that idea of self-suffeciency. Two other big reasons for me would be my love of fresh veggies. We have a great fresh produce store here, and I love going in and seeing what's there. Visiting farmers markets on the weekends also provides enjoyment for my Saturday mornings. I also tend to be very results driven, whether it's in the gym, at work, and now, in the garden. I'm going to take that pile of weeds and dead dirt in my backyard and make something happen with it. To see the change from how it is now to (hopefully) a green garden producing food will not only feed my stomach, but also my emotional need to see the results happen. So... 1) Self-suffeciency 2) Fresh veggies 3) Emotional satisfaction
I think everyone needs to know how to feed themselves. Given all that's going on in the world,,you never know when you may have to put that knowledge to use. At least you know its healthy and safe.
Today I helped my sister butcher her last batch of chickens for the year. She had a friend who wanted two of them and paid my sister handsomely for them. She said she won't eat meat unless she knows who raised it, what it was fed and who processed it. She hasn't had meat since Feb. of this year.
