I have to use heating mats underneath the flats to get the seeds to germinate (too cold otherwise out there). I don't start too many things from seed anymore, just a few vegetable plants that aren't available at our local garden centers. I have a small area set up inside with an overhead fluorescent light that's on a chain so I can raise and lower it as the plants grow, and that works really well.
