I'm making mittens again for a nonprofit organization. I need to have 45 by June. So far I have 13. Getting there... We are also in the home stretch on our bathroom rehab. The toilet is on backorder, so are the faucets, etc. I'm doing some plastering, my husband is installing lights. Here are some photos This last photo is where the toilet will go. I included it so you could see the floor tile. We have to go to a granite shop to pick out a remnant for the vanity top. We think we'll go with something like the floor tile. The tile on the walls is actually greener than it appears in the photos.
Oh wow! Your bathroom will be spectacular--please let us see it when finished. Your mittens are beautiful, but you have so many to make! I hope you are getting donated yarn. Your knitting needles must be worn down to nubbins. Years ago there was a post-kindergarten, pre-first grade class at a local school, and I was talking to the teacher. One little boy came up and took my hand. His hand felt like an icicle. I asked the teacher if he had lost his mittens, and she told me most of the children didn't have mittens--parents couldn't afford them. I went home and started knitting--thank heavens there were only 15 kids in the class! After the first year I found that making all the mittens the same color helped because children do lose mittens and if they were all red then a lost mitten could be replaced. Yours are so much prettier, and probably warmer. Bless your heart!
Oh those mittens are gorgeous. What a great project. Well done. Oh, great to see your bathroom project. That brings back memories. When we look at your foto’s, it looks like it is going very well. The walls are a lovely colour. My Bride really, really likes the marbled idea that your floor and wall tiles show. The little insets into the wall looks good as well. A few years ago we had ours done and you can see the changes in the pics below: This is how it was. Tub on the left, sink in the middle and shower stall on the right. Left side of the bathroom. The left side now: The right side now: The dark tiles on the wall are the same as the ones on the floor, they look darker because of the light-fall. We love our radiator across from the shower...warm towels!! The regular toilet is separate; across the hall, so we didn't’ have to deal with that. When we were selecting the glass for the shower-stall, it was a discussion point as to what kind of glass. The Bride wanted smokey glass and I did not. We had the bright idea to just have no glass at all. No stall. Just an open showering space. I have to tell you we absolutely love the openness of that shower now and there are no glass walls to wipe down after each shower—just a long-handled squeegee over the floor and it’s a wrap.
Sjoerd I love your bathroom!!! It looks very European! I love the idea of not having a shower enclosure. Looks great! I'll post photos of our bathroom as it get completed. Oops folks!!!! I did not knit those mittens, they are made out of old sweaters that i cut up & sewed together. Much easier than knitted. Friends give me their old wool sweaters, I shrink them to make them thicker, & then repurpose them. This is not a new idea, many people have done it. Sorry, I can't claim credit.
Cayu— thanks for your compliment. The shower enclosure was a thing that bothered us the most and took the longest to get sorted. We quickly ruled out making another stall because the stall was part of the reason we started the project in the first place. It just ate up space and was a bit awkward getting into and out of. A second idea we had was to just have a single pane of glass. Quite a few folks here have this solution. While we disagreed on what kind of glass to use, in the end we decided that any glass would take up too much room? The mittens look good. What a great system. I didn’t know you could do that. Live and learn. Some folks are going to be very happy with those mittens. Chapeau to you for this project.
Hubby was working this morning so I did 2 walks instead of the one. Filled up the bird feeders and put some seed out.
@marlingardener I am impressed that you provided 15 pairs of mittens for those kindergarteners....impressed but not surprised.
Cayuga, thank you! I did the mittens for about four years and loved to see the children receive mittens. I insisted on being anonymous since I didn't want to become the mitten provider for the community, but when the teacher handed out mittens and the children put them on before going out to the playground, I was warmer than their little hands!
We had our bathroom done about 6 years ago, someone did it for us, hubby doesn't do DIY. It's a small bathroom with toilet, we wanted a bath as well for when I give the dogs a bath and I like to wash my hair seperatly. I'm standing in the doorway. Behind the door is a heated towel rail To the the right is the basin and toilet, also the window. Got a separate toilet downstairs done with the same type of tiles.
My Bride is sorting piccies and putting them in albums. She has now finished Malaysia and Indonesia and will begin on Oz next. Boy, oh boy—it brings back the memories.
Tomorrow going to have my other cataract done so i won't be on here for most of the day. It's at 10am that's good to miss the morning traffic. Haven't made up our minds whether to take the boys with us. They can be left but they would enjoy the car ride. Been getting things out the way like colouring my hair because I won't be able to bend over the bath for 2 weeks and bend to do anything else. My other eye did very well and after 4 weeks I go back to the opticians for a check up and to have new reading glasses.
That bathroom looks very smart, Loggie. Ours is on the small side as well but without the tub, it seems larger. I can see that a tub is ideal for washing your pride and joys. Good luck tomorrow. You had a really good result with your first one, didn’t you.
Thank you Sjoerd about the bathroom and eye, your tiles look almost like mine, the same colour and yes my right eye did very well. It's not having it done it's just the thought of having to go there and not being able to do things for 2 weeks. But it's a good time of year to do it that it won't affect my seed sowing for next month and the month after.
