Well Hello
I have been growing flowers and vegetables most of my life. My father's father was a big gardener, he loved his plants but had little use for his grandchildren so I did not learn much from him but remember his beautiful gardens. My love of the outdoors combined with love of flowers steered me to gardening. Perennials are my passion and have more of them than I can keep track of. Lilies abound in my yard, all three kinds well maybe four now, not sure if the trumpets are becoming a variety of their own. Utilizing eight distinct garden locations in the yard as well as small plantings around the house and shed, the color and variety that now exist make me smile. There are very few bare spaces but that does not stop me from buying and trading for plants. My goal is to have flowers close to year round which would be a feat in Maine. Any suggestions about early spring or late fall/early winter flowers would be appreciated.
At present moment the only thing growing for me are my house plants, mostly the flowering kind. These include an orchid, arthurian, several peace plants, african violets, amaryllis, ficus, banana plant, a palm like plant with green ball like flowers, several poinsettias, variegated spider, a christmas cactus and a pilea. I have had some failures on the house plant scene but I think the plants were diseased when they arrived. I have done in a cyclamin and a scheffluer (sp?).
Well, enough for now, I am starting to bore even me. Have a wonderful day. diene

You must take photographs of your garden for us Diene as it sounds really lovely. Even in winter there is always something worth looking at in any garden. I have some hardy evergreens that bring a splash of colour in an otherwise monochromatic landscape. I too have lots of house plants - orchids, peace lily, jade plant, African violets, Venus flytraps, jasmine, dragon trees, bonsais etc. I would be lost without plants around me.

I'd love to see your garden. Last year was a mild winter here, and Helleborus purpurescens started blooming in January. Daphne mezereum started before Christmas, just as the last Colchicum died down. Even though we had snow late January, the Daphne kept blooming.

Hi Diene ~
reading about your lilies makes me crave spring. :-)

I have Asiatic, Oriental and Trumpet lilies scattered
here and there in my gardens.

Every year, after Easter, I haunt the big box stores
for the deep discount pots
that didn't get bought, and add a few more to my beds.
Until recently, all that was available that way
were the standard (deliciously scented)
white Lilium longiflorum,
but now, it seems that growers are providing
more variety,
and I've found some rather lovely and colorful ones. :-D
