The Eclectic Garden

Making a little bit of everything look just right.

Korean Hyssop

Category: Gardening | Posted: Mon Apr 28, 2014 9:36 pm

This is a Korean Hyssop plant that self-seeded in the garden from last year. It came up slap dab in the middle of the walk row, but I decided to leave it there. It goes with my whole eclectic garden theme that way. I had to nurse it through the winter, but I think it's going to be worth it.

Korean Hyssop is similar to Anise Hyssop. They both have that licorice smell, but I think the flowers are much prettier on the Korean Hyssop. I know the bees definitely love it.

I'll post another picture after it starts blooming.

Checked The Bees

Category: Bees | Posted: Sun Apr 27, 2014 1:13 pm

I didn't think I was going to get the opportunity yesterday, but I got to crack open the bee hives.

My strong hive is doing well and has one full super of honey. Something must have happened to the queen though because I didn't find any capped brood. I did find some empty queen cells. I will check again in a couple of weeks.

About two months ago I did my first walk away split with my other hive. I am excited to say that both hives are doing well. I kept one at my house and moved the other to my brother's house. The split was pretty easy and it increased my hives from two to three.

I learned about walk away splits at one of the bee club meetings I attended. Since I am a beekeeping newbie attending the meetings has been very informative. I think three hives is about my limit. I thoroughly enjoy it, but I don't want to have more than I can manage properly.

Chickens In The Garden

Category: Chickens | Posted: Sat Apr 26, 2014 12:31 pm

I don't have a fence around the garden so the chickens wander in and out. I start everything in a small greenhouse and then transplant. The two plants that were hit the hardest was the okra and the borage. The squash, tomatoes, and onions were unscathed. They picked at some of the cucumbers and amaranth, but not too bad.

Also hit hard were the blueberries. Not the leaves mind you, but the fruit. They really enjoy eating the berries that are just about ready to pick.

There will definitely be a fence going up soon.

No Gardening Today

Category: Gardening | Posted: Sat Apr 26, 2014 12:03 pm

I wanted to open up the bee hives today and work on a couple things in the garden, but unfortunately the radiator on my Jeep decided to spring a leak. So, instead of getting my hands dirty I guess I'll be getting them greasy. It's just not the same.

Beginning

Category: Gardening | Posted: Fri Apr 25, 2014 10:38 am

I've kept a blog before, but this is the first time it has been mostly dedicated to gardening. The site is pretty awesome (notwithstanding the newbie patch that I've been saddled with for a while). That's okay though, we all start out as babies. I am looking forward to sharing about this year's garden and reading other garden enthusiast's blogs. Can't wait to get started.
