The Eclectic Garden

Making a little bit of everything look just right.

Sunflower Journal, Saturday 4/2/16, week 7

Category: Gardening | Posted: Sat Apr 02, 2016 12:22 pm

Every week I look more and more forward to checking out the sunflowers. They have popped up another eight inches since I measured them last Saturday. They are now up to 20 inches tall.

The plants are up to 1 foot tall now and the leaves continue to spread out. There were a couple of places that the seeds didn't come up when I originally planted them, so I replanted two weeks ago and they are coming along nicely.

Chicken Thief Revelation

Category: Chickens | Posted: Thu Mar 24, 2016 4:35 pm

So, even though I got a look at a coyote in the back of the field I don't think that is what has been getting my chickens. I'm farly certain now that it is a fox.

The last couple of weeks I've seen him at least four times. One time I shot at him because I thought it was the coyote. The other times I've watched him in my field, cleverly waiting for the chickens to come down out of the tree.

Watching that fox has caused me to have an epiphany. I've suddenly realized that it's not the wild animal's fault for killing the chickens... it's mine! Obviously, I haven't done a good job keeping them safe. The fox simply wants to eat and has realized he can get a morning snack when the chickens come down.

I need to find a way to remove the temptation from the predators. Why should I kill a fox, coyote or any other animal simply for trying to survive? I'm still worried about coyotes snatching up our little dogs, but my views on this have certainly changed.

I'm working on ways to protect the chickens better. Hopefully that will eliminate, or at least curtail, the predator threat.

Vintage RV Show

Category: Life As I Know It | Posted: Sun Mar 20, 2016 11:00 am

A few months ago my wife found out about a vintage RV show that was going to be about an hour from our house and she has been eagerly awaiting the day ever since.

Of course, even though it hasn't rained in weeks, the skies opened up for the show yesterday. We didn't let it deter us though and we went anyway... umbrellas and all.

It turned out great. Most of the owners still let people come in and look around. Some just wanted you to poke your head in, but that was okay.

I only took pictures at the end so I only have one pic of one of the smallest trailers
there. Small... really small. Of course there were bigger ones. My wife really likes Shasta trailers (you can find pics on the Internet). I don't know which one I like.

They are starting to get bigger leaves now... and have grown four inches since last Saturday. I am really looking forward to watching them bloom.

A Welcome Addition To The Garden

Category: Gardening | Posted: Thu Mar 17, 2016 6:22 pm

I was digging holes in my garden for the new blueberry bushes this past weekend and was delighted to find this guy. I've been trying really hard to get my soil right and it's always a good sign when the earthworms move in.

Toadstool Philosopher

Category: Gardening | Posted: Tue Mar 15, 2016 11:03 am

I was using the roto tiller to break up the garden when a small toad jumped out in front of me. He took three or four leaps and then stopped about three feet away from the oncoming tines. As the tines drew closer, instead of jumping out of the way, the toad started moving his back legs and I watched with interest as he slowly buried himself. In a matter of seconds the only thing that I could see was his eyes and nose. If I stayed on course I was going to run right over him. So, I stopped the tines, reached into the dirt and moved him to a safe location.

I couldn't help but analyze the situation. In some ways we are like that toad. Oftentimes, danger will be headed right toward us, but instead of moving out of the way we simply ignore it and hope it goes around us. Like that toad in the dirt, unless someone else gives us a hand, we get plowed right over.

Stinking Coyote

Category: Chickens | Posted: Sun Mar 13, 2016 2:44 pm

I am so over this coyote! I got up this morning, stepped in the back yard and spotted the chicken thief in my field enjoying a fresh kill.

I crept back in the house and got my trusty .22 rifle. I had plenty of time to line up the sights, but I must have pulled up when I shot because he ran off unhurt.

The chickens he keeps getting roost in the tree every night. I would love to lock them up, but they get so far up there's no way I could climb up and get them out of the tree.

I'm down to four of those chickens now. A friend gave me five more and I'm keeping them in the pen. I hate it, but they're not getting out until the coyote is gone.

Okay, I'm going to start using a tape measure. One month into it and some of them are 3" high at this point. I'm interested to see how much growth we see next week.

Do Not Lock

Category: Life As I Know It | Posted: Thu Mar 10, 2016 1:20 am

I parked next to this truck yesterday and did a double take when I saw the writing on the window.

There's obviously a reason the owner didn't want the door locked, but I don't believe he thought this through very well. I mean, do you really want to advertise the fact that your door doesn't lock to every criminal out there?
