Sunflower Journal, Saturday 3/5/16, week 3
Category: Gardening | Posted: Sat Mar 05, 2016 12:11 pm Okay, I have to admit that the pictures were taken this past Thursday because I knew I would be at my daughter's house this weekend. The thought of driving 4 1/2 hours one way just to snap a picture of a sunflower didn't seem too appealing. Category: Gardening | Posted: Sat Feb 27, 2016 8:24 pm I noticed the sunflowers starting to break through the ground this past Monday. Here's a picture of one that I took today. Sunflower Journal, Saturday 2/20/16, week 1
Category: Gardening | Posted: Sun Feb 21, 2016 12:22 am I fell in love with sunflowers a couple of years ago and now they are a staple in my garden. I am going to attempt to document my sunflowers in weekly pictures this year. I planted Mammoth Russian. I like the smaller ones too, but I especially like these because the heads are so big. I like the big stalks too. I let them dry out and then put them back on my garden so the organic matter can be worked into the soil. I tried roasting the seeds for myself, but the best use that I've gotten is chicken treats. I'll cut one of those big seed heads off and just put it on the ground. The chickens love it and normally have it picked clean in no time. The weather has been wonderful here, so I put the seeds in the ground last Saturday, 2/13. As of today they haven't broken through the ground yet so the picture doesn't show much. Broken Washer... Not!!!
Category: Life As I Know It | Posted: Thu Feb 18, 2016 11:12 pm So, I get home from work the other day and hear the words that every man dreads to hear, "Honey, the washer's not working." Immediately, dancing dollar signs flashed before my eyes. After the dollar signs faded a little I rolled up my sleeves and took a look at it. It didn't take too long to narrow it down to the lid switch. Here's the best part. I went on Amazon Prime and found the lid switch with free shipping. $7.44 and two days later the washer is working again. Coyotes
Category: Chickens | Posted: Mon Feb 01, 2016 11:49 pm Well, I've lost 13 chickens since December. I think a possum got a couple of them, but the main culprits are coyotes. I walked to the back of the property this afternoon, gun in hand, and ran right into one. I had a clean shot, but for a second I thought it might be someone's dog. Of course, by the time I was 100% sure it was a coyote he was showing me his hind end. My egg production is way down and my chicken's lives are at stake. This is war. Double Post
Category: Gardening | Posted: Sat Jan 16, 2016 1:21 pm I posted this under the MEMBER'S GALLERY, then realized that I should have blogged it because it kind of goes with the blog I posted last year about getting a bunch of amaryllis for 2 cents each. At any rate, you can find more details and pics under the GALLERY post, but I got these pots for $1 each. If you couldn't tell, I'm pretty excited about it. Phenomenol Lavender not so Phenomenol
Category: Gardening | Posted: Tue Jan 12, 2016 2:32 pm So, I purchased a new lavender called Phenomenol this past year that was supposed to be able to handle more humid environments like Florida. It did okay with the humidity, but couldn't handle the summer heat. Needless to say, it succumbed to Florida's renowned sunshine. However, I am happy to report that I also purchased a lavender called Boysenberry Ruffles at the same time and it as been... well phenomenol in the garden. Now I have to see if it will get cold enough to encourage some blooms. A secret dream of mine would be to have a lavender farm in Central Florida, but finding a plant that will fluorish is the main problem. I may never have the money or opportunity to really have a lavender farm, but it doesn't hurt to dream. This blog entry has been viewed 497 times
Paris
Category: Life As I Know It | Posted: Tue Nov 17, 2015 10:34 am It makes me so mad to think about those eight cowards that killed 129 people in Paris this weekend. I honestly can't comprehend what the survivors of that horrific terrorist attack are going through right now. I will be lifting up thoughts and prayers for them and for our world leaders that we can come together against a common enemy. This blog entry has been viewed 518 times
Where has the time gone?
Category: Life As I Know It | Posted: Sun Nov 15, 2015 11:49 am There are days when nostalgia just takes over and today is one of those days. As often is the case, I woke up somewhere around 5 am. Unfortunately, I can seldom go back to sleep. So, here I am sitting in a quiet house wondering how my children have grown up so fast. This train of thought is being driven by the fact that my 23 year old son is getting married next Saturday. He completed Fire College last year and recently started a career with the local fire department. I remember him as a toddler when he used to crawl around on the floor with little stuffed toys in his mouth. I remember reading him stories at night, helping him with homework and driving him to soccer matches. I remember his first heartbreak, his first car and his first paycheck. So many memories. Now he's starting another journey and, as I learned with my daughter who got married 7 years ago, it's one that sees me in a different role. I'm still Dad to him, but now I also get to be Dad to his wife. I haven't lost a son, I've gained a daughter. I know the relationship is different, but in a lot of ways its still the same. There will be peaks and valleys for him (and her) and I can be there to pray for them and encourage them along the way. My family keeps growing... and I'm so thankful. The Menu Has Changed
Category: Life As I Know It | Posted: Fri Nov 13, 2015 12:34 am So, I called a vendor the other day and got the standard recorded message. Why do they always say, "Please listen carefully as our menu options have changed?" Do they really think that I can remember the menu options from the last time that I called? I mean, I can barely remember them right after hearing them. And why did the menu options have to change in the first place? Is it absolutely necessary to have your customers press "1" for sales instead of "2"? For heaven sakes leave the menu options alone!
