Giant Banana Plant

Category: Garden Novice | Posted: Mon Jun 16, 2008 6:27 pm

I asked my daughter to buy a banana plant to put in the back garden next to my other two. These are the dark purple leafed plants - very pretty. I had been getting them for around $6.00 at our local garden center. So Angie, my daughter, brings me a 5' tree and tells me I owe her $28.00! It's beautiful and is sitting on the porch until I can get hubby to plant it in the back garden. It's going to dwarf the other two. I also want to get several Agave to go back there.

You must post some photographs of your banana tree once it's in place Eileen. I wish I could grow such exotic trees here in Scotland.

I lived in Germany for awhile and I couldn't grow anything exotic. Coming from Florida, it was frustrating but I did find plants there that I loved and adapted to my garden. Sometimes you can find tropical looking plants that will grow in cold climates.

I remember doing something similar. My mother sent me off to check for a specific kind of Rhododendron, and she was flabbergasted when I came home with one. I hope your banana tree grows well for you!

Enjoy your tree, GN;
Tropical gardening is fun. There were Avocados, citrus and Bananas where we lived in West Palm.

Doesn't look like anyone has posted here in awhile. I grow banana trees here in SE GA. I started with 2 a couple of years ago and now have about a dozen. I have my "mother" plant and take her babies up and replant in another location. They are lots of fun to grow! I will post pics in the Spring.

Wow, I can't believe I haven't logged into the group for over a year. A lot has happened in our family and I haven't had much time for gardening, groups or anything.

As for the banana trees, I had a great little grove growing and something happened to them and they're all dying. I'm going to pull them all out in the next few weeks and recondition the soil and try growing something else. I'm thinking of planting a Bird Of Paradise in that corner as they seem to grow well here and do take up a bit of space when mature.

Now that things have calmed down in our family, I'll post here more often. Maybe I'll be able to enjoy my garden again.

Eileen - not sure where you live in Scotland but with the Gulf Stream cutting near the West Coast Palm Trees can grow nicely, even if it's not a banana! :)
