Miss Liberty's BlogTrial, error, and a few asides in my attempt to become a veggie gardener.
Rolling my eyes as this mistake
Category: Liberty's "Victory" Garden | Posted: Mon Jun 13, 2011 5:53 pm Yesterday was a day of discovery for me (as I wrote in my previous blog). I forgot to mention one more. My husband thankfully pointed it out. (Thanks, hon). A week ago I planted a bunch of different seeds. One of the things I planted was yellow squash. Or so I thought. When I pulled out the rest of my seeds this weekend, I found my packet of yellow squash seeds unopened. So then I thought that maybe I'd planted the zucchini instead. Only that packet was also unopened. So I guess I planted something, but I'm not sure what. I'm not even going to try to classify that "discovery" about myself. Here's where I roll my eyes. Whatever I planted is coming up great, so I guess it will be a surprise. Gotta love gardening...! This blog entry has been viewed 392 times
New discoveries
Category: Liberty's "Victory" Garden | Posted: Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:19 pm It's just after 4 in the afternoon and I'm done for the day. It was a day of discovery. I discovered new seedlings popping through the dirt every hour. I discovered leafcutter bees (which I've never heard of). And I discovered that weeds appear out of nowhere as soon as you turn your back. I spent most of the day getting a tan while I continue to clean up a yard the previous owners left in a mess. But I also see so much potential in it. {{{ Take small steps, Libby }}}. Tomorrow it's back to work (part-time) so I won't be able to do as much as I did this weekend, but overall I'm pleased with the work I did get done. Now it's time to pour some lemonade (sorry, can't drink tea...blech) and sit out on the patio and enjoy the afternoon with the husband. This blog entry has been viewed 323 times
First Appearances!
Category: Liberty's "Victory" Garden | Posted: Sun Jun 12, 2011 2:45 pm Now I know that you seasoned gardeners don't get too excited when the first plants that start growing out of your gardens. After all, isn't that what's supposed to happen when you plant seeds? This morning I went out to inspect my Victory Garden, still questioning how victorious it's going to be, and good morning, I have plants. My yellow squash, corn, and cucumbers were all coming up this morning! When I was last out in the garden last night there was nothing growing but some tiny weeds. And this morning what I planted last Sunday has started pushing out of the ground. I'm excited! I had to wake the husband up to show him that our first garden was growing. Now about those weeds... ...And Liberty's Victory Garden is born
Category: Liberty's "Victory" Garden | Posted: Sat Jun 11, 2011 9:46 pm Blogging...Since I've discovered gardening and because I'm an English teacher with a love of words, what better activity to do after gardening than to write about it. I should probably give a little more background about myself. Don't worry, I'll try to keep it brief. I'm 23 (soon to be 24 on July 4th, hence my name) and just graduated with a degree in English Education. And thankfully, I've been hired to teach in my husband's and my hometown. We are coming up on our six month anniversary in a couple of weeks. I used to throw rocks at my husband when we were kids because he used to tease me so much. Gratefully, he's forgive that incident :). And we've just moved into our first house about a month ago. The past several years meant living in dorm rooms or apartments, but now I can have my garden. I've named it Liberty's Victory Garden as a play on my name and a bit of WWII history. Now whether or not Libby is victorious with the garden remains to be seen. I know it's a little late in the year to start it, but I tried to pick quick growing crops that will be ready in the short growing season I have left. Last week, I did the first digging. I planted sweet corn, zucchini, yellow summer squash, a tomato plant, a green pepper plant, cucumbers, and pumpkins. Working in the yard the past couple of days has made me realize that there is a lot of potential in the yard for a more expansive garden. Plus there is a grape vine of some type, a small patch or rhubarb, and some sage. So far, six days into my garden and no new plants have poked through yet (excepts for weeds). I'll be patient. Until the next entry... Miss (now Mrs.) Liberty This blog entry has been viewed 292 times
