Hive #2Okay, I really don't think this hive is going to make it. I checked the girls, and I still can't find a queen. I see no evidence of a queen. No eggs or brood. I started feeding syrup when I changed the frames, but they aren't really taking much, and aren't foraging either. I added another frame of eggs and brood, but the bees just hauled the larvae out of the hive and began destroying the comb. I don't know what they are doing. I have to assume they do. I just don't know what to do next, or even if I should do anything at all. This blog entry has been viewed 259 times

How do the bees act? are they mean/aggressive? or fairly docile? how old was the larvae? it really needs to be less that 3 days old for them to use it to make a new queen. But I have no idea why they would take out the larvae and destroy the comb even if it was more than the 3 day stage. that makes no sense to me, either.
I missed your last entry, sorry. I think you need to give them a bit more time at this point if they are docile/quiet. I think it may be just the beginning of your queen getting ready to lay, even if you don't see her at this point. If she has just emerged from a queen cell she is not the full size of a mature queen yet and is very hard to pick out. She may have even been out of the hive on a mating flight. I think you should put in another frame of eggs if by chance she is maimed or hurt in her mating flight.
The bees are docile. Not agressive at all. I will add another frame over the weekend, and see what happens. I really waant to get this hive strong. Login or register to leave a comment. |
