My Hosta Farm

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Fri Jun 07, 2013 7:40 pm

Here's what I call my hosta farm. I grew a patch of 3-4 varieties here, and then I can grab one and divide it any time I need to fill in a spot somewhere on the property. Very handy, especially with the price they're charging for just starts.

Free Plants

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Tue Jun 04, 2013 4:38 pm

I cleared out the areas next to the house last year, knowing the contractors would trample anything that was there installing the siding. Luckily, I have so many varieties of hosta that I just took some baby starts, and cut out a piece of a few others to transplant into this shady area along the house. With the cool weather and regular rain, I'm sure they will be fine. Now I must ask my husband if the septic cleanout stack really needs to be that tall! The hosta I put around it will get quite large, so hopefully they'll hide it even if we don't cut it down.

Still More Bearded Iris Blooming

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Mon Jun 03, 2013 7:33 pm

I know there's still at least one more new variety that hasn't bloomed yet. But here's a new one. It thought I'd planted Lady Friend here, but I don't remember it being this dark...hmmm.

Not new, but I just love Megabucks.

Haven't seen my Starship Enterprise iris yet (my favorite), hoping it's the ones on the left or bottom that haven't sent up blooms yet.

A Few More Iris Varieties

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Wed May 29, 2013 9:26 pm

I had to sneak out between downpours and snap a few pics before the severe weather comes through and batters the new blooms.

This is the first variegated bearded iris I've ever had.

Hope these don't get battered, they're just starting to bloom. (Avalon Sunset)

I brought in iris stem that got broken off in a storm and hadn't opened it's blooms, and it actually opened up in a vase! Very cool.

More Bearded Iris

More storms predicted, so I tried to get some photos of the iris blooms before the storms roll through.

Stormy Weather

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Mon May 27, 2013 8:12 pm

We didn't have a tornado, but plenty of straight line winds. Lots of tree branches to pick up, and some flattened taller flowers. But I just tied them back up. We fared well, some neighbors had more tree damage than we did.

I was disappointed I didn't take photos yesterday, these were looking a lot better then.

Planting Day

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sun May 26, 2013 10:41 pm

We finally got most of the vegetable garden planted today. Craig made more cages to keep the deer out and helped install the rabbit fence, while I planted. Also weeded some flower gardens & planted some annuals. This year we're growing several varieties of tomatoes and peppers, heirloom green beans and carrots, onions, snap peas, peas, watermelon, and potatoes.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sun May 26, 2013 2:16 am

We haven't had a lot of rain lately, just a daily dose. It's making getting the vegetable garden planted a bit of a challenge. So I finally got my rain boots out and planted my tomatoes and peppers anyway (30 tomatoes/16 peppers). If the rain holds off tonight, maybe I can get the rest in tomorrow.

Just relaxing after working in the garden...

More Front Yard Gardens

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Fri May 24, 2013 1:35 am

We had a fence for our former dog that got removed, leaving this odd shaped garden that was originally planted up against the fence. I decided I kind of liked it and just finished trimming it out with leftover brick edging I had on hand. This is the spring look of this garden, it will change dramatically through the summer.
