Caught another Swarm!

Category: Happenings around the house | Posted: Tue May 01, 2012 4:30 pm

Got a call about 8:30 last night. The same place that had the first swarm had another! So we went back and got a second swarm. They are all cozy in their new hive this morning. Now I really feel like a beekeeper. I have two hives! It was very interesting. I am thoroughly enjoying this!

Category: In the Garden | Posted: Mon Apr 30, 2012 2:01 pm

April 30, 2012. We have actual tomatoes on the vine! They are the size of marbles, but they are there! 3 beautiful little tomatoes! Yahoo! Green beans and peppers are blooming, and we have tiny squash growing too! now if we could just get a little rain to help things along.

The flowers are blooming, my yard smells.....well, delicious! The vegetables are off to a wonderful start. Tomatoes and squash are blooming and cucumbers are putting on runners. Bees are buzzing right along! No issues or problems, so far. So all in all I am a happy gardener today!

A home for Bees

Category: Happenings around the house | Posted: Wed Apr 18, 2012 2:28 pm

I would like to thank member Marlingardens for all her information and encouragement with my new project. It looks like we now have a hive of honeybees! They are actively carrying pollen into the hive, and this means that they are building brood. The queen is laying eggs and they are feeding babies! I am so excited! My cousin has given us plans so we can build more boxes and frames. My DH is a carpenter by trade, so I am lucky. I hope to have more bees in the future! They sure are fun to watch!

and now, bees.

Category: Happenings around the house | Posted: Mon Apr 16, 2012 5:25 pm

Well, I had an opportunity this Friday night, and I took it. My cousin was called to remove a honeybee swarm and he asked if I would like to tag along. He used to keep bees and we have had many and varied discussions on the subject over the years. Of course, I said yes. We were able to remove the swarm, and no one was stung. As he was deciding what best to do with the new swarm, he asked " would you like to keep them?" "HUH?". I don't know anything about beekeeping! He assured me it was safe, not too difficult and he had "'bout everything you're gonna need", so I said yes. I now have a hive box and bees. This is going to be interesting!

a different kind of morning

Category: Happenings around the house | Posted: Thu Apr 05, 2012 3:03 pm

Without children to get up and get ready for school, I found myself with extra time on my hands before work this morning. My husband and I decided to take our coffee and go out to sit in the swing. It was the first time I had ever gone out and watched the day start in my garden. We sit outside in the evenings, as the day winds down, but I never really made time for it in the mornings. It was quiet, and peaceful. DH and I didn't talk much, just watched the day beginning around us. What a lovely way to start the day! I hope we can make this a regular part of mornings from now on!

Tomatoes

Category: In the Garden | Posted: Thu Apr 05, 2012 2:57 pm

I was excited to see blooms on the tomato plants yesterday! I cant wait to have biscuits and tomatoes for breakfast! ( I know it will still be awhile ) My DH is just like a little kid when it comes to tomatoes! Every day he has something he wants to show me when I get home from work. It is really very sweet, but don't tell him I said that! I am hoping for a bumper crop this year, and with fifteen plants in bloom, it looks as though we are well on our way! I am surprised at how FAST everything is growing!

what's growing today

Category: In the Garden | Posted: Mon Apr 02, 2012 4:44 pm

We have been ambitious this year. In the veggie garden we are now growing: cucumbers, tomatoes, snap beans, carrots, cabbage, onions, potatoes, squash,& cayenne peppers. We did a little boiling water canning last year. We are looking forward to doing more this year, and we are going to try our hand at pressure canning too! I really enjoyed canning last year. It reminds me of my grandparents and great aunts who are no longer with us. I wish I had taken time to learn things like this from them when they were here.

A little Background

Category: Happenings around the house | Posted: Thu Mar 29, 2012 5:33 pm

When my DH and I were married, my father in law gave us "pick of the place". He allowed us to select 2 acres anywhere on his 38 acre homestead. (My husband's family has lived on this piece of land since the late 1800s.) We selected our spot. My husband, who was then working out of town all week and only home on the weekends, didn't have much time to donate to clearing the area we chose and readying it for us. I am scared to death of power tools and equipment, being a "city girl" and all, so I set out to do the majority of the work by hand. It took us almost two years to get everything done, but it was definitely worth all the hard work! I absolutely love the spot we chose! I even talked my father in law into moving an old shed he built as a boy over onto our spot, and I use it for a garden shed. Our place hasn't reached it's full potential yet, but the journey we are making together is what I enjoy most!

the woodpeckers update.

Category: Happenings around the house | Posted: Thu Mar 29, 2012 2:27 pm

yes, I am almost certain there is a nest in the dead sweet gum tree! I took my camera out yesterday and laid down under the tree. I waited patiently. And waited...and waited... and waited a little more....but my patience paid off! I was able to get some shots of one of the woodpeckers! They aren't perfect photos, but I like them! I will try uploading them!
